Everyone knew about the old man’s tough streak back in the day. Plenty of people had seen it for themselves. Apparently, things had changed a bit.
“Well…” Charlie started to speak, but Richie cut him off with just a look.
“Thank you for your trouble. Marriage is about mutual consent, so of course Cindy’s opinion matters,” Richie said, nodding politely.
George’s eyes lit up. He glanced at Richie, looking almost impressed.
Once Charlie and Richie left the estate, Charlie couldn’t hold back anymore. “Why’d you stop me? I wanted George to make up his mind right then. The longer this drags on, the more likely something will go wrong.”
Richie let out a sigh. His father was getting up there in years, and he just didn’t see things so clearly anymore.
“Dad, he isn’t who he used to be. After the family dinner, he values family more than anything. Now that he’s older, all he wants is for everyone to get along.”
Charlie’s heart skipped a beat. “What are you saying?”
Richie looked out the window. The days were getting colder, and it was getting dark earlier too. It was only about five, but the sky already looked like someone had spilled gray ink across it.
He spoke quietly. “I don’t think it’s going to work out.”
Charlie fell silent. Neither of them said another word.
He was still feeling down about how everything seemed to be falling apart when they got home and heard voices coming from the living room.
Charlie and Richie stepped in and a maid handed them slippers. Then they saw her—Cindy was there.
Charlie was startled, but then his face broke into a big grin. “Cindy? What brings you by today?”
Cindy stood up, smiled, and greeted him. “Hello, Mr. Garfield.” She glanced at Richie and gave him a polite nod. “Hi, Richie.”
Charlie looked up and noticed Jon was back too, sitting on the sofa. Charlie’s smile disappeared. “What are you doing home?”
Macie rolled her eyes at him. “What’s with that attitude? Most parents are happy when their kids come home. You act like it’s a problem.”
