Macie’s excitement was impossible to hide. She’d always felt her son and Cindy were perfect for each other, so seeing Cindy officially become her daughter-in-law felt like living in a dream. Her smile, bright and genuine, suddenly froze when she caught sight of Charlie’s icy stare.
Charlie took a shaky breath. “I can’t believe this! He went and got married without even asking me. He knows Cindy was supposed to be…” He glanced at his oldest son, swallowing back the words “his future sister-in-law.” He muttered, “Does he even care what I think anymore?”
Out of the three of them, Richie seemed the calmest. His face was unreadable as he spoke up. “Honestly, I think it’s fine. Whether Cindy marries me or Jon, she’s part of the Garfield family either way. The result’s the same. If they really love each other, then I’m happy for them.”
Macie looked at Richie with surprise, like she was seeing a new side of her stepson. She jumped in, “They’re definitely in love. Didn’t you see how Jon protected Cindy earlier? That wasn’t fake. He really cares about her.”
Richie nodded. “Great. In that case, Macie, when you have time, you can help Jon pick out a few houses. We can start getting the wedding ready too. Don’t worry about the cost. We have to treat Cindy right.”
Macie nodded eagerly. “Absolutely. I’ll ask Cindy what kind of place she likes.”
Richie stood up. “Alright. I need to get through a few emails upstairs.”
With Richie’s blessing, Charlie couldn’t keep fussing. After a few deep sighs, he started thinking about which other prominent families in Coralbridge still had single daughters. Jon was getting married now, and Richie couldn’t put things off much longer. It just wouldn’t look good.
When Jon and Cindy came back to the living room, the whole vibe was warm and peaceful. They shared a look, barely able to keep their smiles in check.
At dinner, Macie kept piling food onto Cindy’s plate. Afterward, she grabbed Cindy’s hand and quietly asked what kind of house she wanted, already planning to buy them a new place as a wedding present.
Cindy’s cheeks turned pink. “Jon and I already moved into the house the family set up for him. It’s basically our home now.”
Macie blinked in surprise. They were already living together? Her son really didn’t waste time. She leaned in and whispered, “So, when are you two planning to have kids?”
Cindy hid her face in her hands. “We haven’t really thought about it yet.”
Macie nodded quickly. “Of course, of course. You just got together. Take your time.” Then she squeezed Cindy’s hand and started asking about her dream wedding. “Just tell me and Chelsey what you want. We’ll take care of everything.”
