“Bruce, don’t make things worse. Kelley’s waiting for you at home,” Paul said, stepping closer. “I saw her before I left. She’s not doing well.”

Paul knew the only person who could really get through to Bruce was his mother. From the time he was a kid, Bruce had one goal: never let his mom down. Kelley wanted him to make it at Lamont Inc., to prove everyone wrong, show them that she and her son deserved respect. So Bruce made her dream his own. He lived for her approval.

Bruce stayed quiet for a long time. Finally, he whispered, “How’s my dad treating her?”

Paul pressed his lips together. “Word is, Hector’s been very attentive with his new secretary.”

Bruce’s eyes widened. His jaw clenched tight, and he spat out, “Bastard!”

Stephen raised an eyebrow and let out a low laugh. “So that’s the Lamont family tradition. Now it makes sense.”

Bruce’s forehead was tense, his right fist clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. Then, out of nowhere, he started laughing. “You think I don’t know what you’re doing? You’re trying to use my mom to get to me. Well, forget it. I’m not falling for it.”

Stephen narrowed his eyes. “What’s in your right hand?”

Paul noticed too. He moved in and pried Bruce’s fingers open. Under the light, you could see a small bottle of medicine. The cap was off. Only half was left.

Paul’s face changed. “You already used this. Who was it for? Rebecca?”

Stephen’s expression turned ice cold. “Talk. Where is she?”

Bruce stared back, totally unafraid. “Go on, shoot me. If I can’t be with her, it doesn’t matter if I live or die.”

Stephen didn’t blink. “Drop your pathetic act. There’s no audience here.”

“Just do it. Enough talking. I’d rather die than let you win.”

Stephen’s finger tightened on the trigger. His eyes were dark and deadly.

Bruce closed his eyes, waiting for the end. Maybe it was for the best. Rebecca had just left, and he’d follow right after. He could keep her company, so she wouldn’t be alone. Maybe if they were lucky, they’d be reborn together and meet in the next life. That would be good. At least then, she’d be his and no one else’s.

Suddenly, Stephen leaned in. His voice was a cold whisper right by Bruce’s ear.

“My guys found out your mother opened a beauty salon. I hear she’s got some extra services on the side. What do you think happens if I report her? She’ll have a roof over her head for the rest of her life. I just wonder how someone so used to comfort will manage behind bars.”
