Bruce’s eyes flew wide open. “How did you—”
“How did I know?” Rebecca’s voice was steady, almost cold. “I heard your entire conversation with Dr. Jason.”
Bruce went silent. He’d dragged the safe all the way here, planning to give her the injection right then and there. Now that she’d caught him, there was no point pretending. He met Rebecca’s gaze head on, his eyes dark and unflinching.
“Rebecca, don’t be scared. This medicine won’t hurt you.”
He opened the safe, pulled out a small vial, and filled a syringe with the liquid inside. Stepping closer, he held up the needle, his voice turning gentle. “One shot, and it’s over. No more pain. Just happiness. We won’t ever have to go back. We can start a new life, somewhere far away. I’ll take care of you, I promise. We’ll have a home, maybe even a kid one day…”
Rebecca shook her head frantically, her eyes wild and desperate. “Stay away from me,” she warned. “Take one more step and I’ll jump down from here!”
Bruce ignored her, stepping forward with a smile that barely touched his lips. “Rebecca, you won’t jump. Think about your mom. She’s not well. She needs her medicine, her checkups. If you jump, what’s going to happen to her?”
Rebecca’s eyes flickered with pain. She closed them, just for a moment, like she was holding herself together. It felt like her heart had been ripped open, bleeding everywhere.
If there was anyone in the world she couldn’t bear to leave behind, it was her mom.
And there was him…
A gentle, handsome face appeared in her mind. Stephen. I’m sorry. If there’s a next life, I hope I meet you first.
Bruce saw the change in her face and let out a small, victorious laugh. He knew he’d hit her weak spot.
“Come here, Rebecca. Let’s end all of this. We can go back to how things used to be.”
But Rebecca’s eyes snapped open, and she gave him a broken, beautiful smile. “If that’s my only choice, I’d rather die.”
Without a second thought, she turned and jumped off the cliff behind her.
There was a moment of stunned silence, then a dull thud echoed up from below.
The guards stared, frozen. They rushed to the edge, but there was no sign of her. The cliff wasn’t bottomless, but it was high. And below, the ocean churned. Who knew what waited on the rocks?
They swallowed hard and looked at Bruce. “Mr. Lamont, what should we do now?”
Bruce stood like a statue. The cold wind cut right through him, and he felt nothing. Rebecca would rather die than be with him. Did she really hate him that much?
“Mr. Lamont, we are so...” one of the guards started, but Bruce snapped, his face dark and furious.
“Shut up! She’s fine. She’ll be fine!”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
