Shawn noticed the way both women stared at him and realized he probably looked like a total disaster. He quickly tried to fix his collar and smooth out his hair, then hurried over to Rebecca’s bedside.
“You’re awake,” he said, his voice gentle but worried. “How are you feeling? Are you in any pain?”
Rebecca watched him carefully. The worry in his eyes looked real, and the icy walls she’d built around herself started to melt. Was it true? Did she really jump into the sea because of a fight with him? He didn’t seem like the kind of guy who would push someone to that point. She just couldn’t picture someone with a face like his making his girlfriend so upset she’d want to end it all. And her… She glanced down at herself. Was she really the kind of person who’d risk her life over something so small? What kind of girl was she?
Rebecca pressed her hand to her forehead, trying to force some memory to the surface, but nothing came except a dull ache in her head.
“What’s wrong? Does your head hurt? I’ll get the doctor,” Shawn blurted out, his face turning pale as he watched her clutch her head.
She quickly shook her head. The last thing she wanted was a doctor poking around, asking questions she couldn’t answer. Right then, her stomach growled, loud and clear. She shot Shawn an embarrassed look. “Are you hungry?”
Shawn couldn’t help but laugh. “What do you wanna have? I’ll go get you something.”
Rebecca thought for a second. “Something warm, I guess.”
“Alright.”
Shawn left the hospital and headed to the nearest bakery. Rebecca was still recovering, so sweet or oily foods were out. He bought two hot milks and two bacon rolls.
While the cashier packed up his order, Shawn’s phone rang. It was his assistant.
“Hey, boss, we’ve got a nightmare client on our hands. Only you can handle them. You’re coming back tomorrow, right?”
Shawn ran a small law firm in London. It wasn’t big, less than ten people, but the money was decent and life felt steady. He liked it that way. In his free time, he volunteered locally and sometimes joined trips abroad with his group. That’s how he’d ended up on this little island.
On their last day, the group organized a sightseeing trip by the sea. That’s where he’d found Rebecca, unconscious in the water. When he first saw her, he honestly thought he was dreaming. What were the odds she’d be here? It wasn’t until he heard people shouting all around him that he realized it was real. He’d carried her straight to the hospital.
It was a close call, but after a night fighting a high fever, she finally woke up. Before he left her room, the doctor warned him that Rebecca had temporary amnesia and he should be prepared.
Shawn went quiet.
Her eyes wandered to Shawn, who was already on his phone nearby. No wonder they’d argued. He was glued to his work. In just a few minutes, he’d answered calls, replied to messages, never even stopping for a second. She probably felt like she came second to his job. Maybe she did something drastic just to prove she mattered more. It was childish, really.
Rebecca decided she should apologize. She pushed herself over in the wheelchair, rolling up quietly behind him so she could say sorry when he finished his call.
“Book me a flight back to London this afternoon,” Shawn said into his phone.
Rebecca’s eyes shot open. A flight? Just one? Was he leaving her here? Her heart started pounding. Was he seriously going to abandon her when she could barely walk? Was he really breaking up with her?
When Shawn finally hung up and turned around, he nearly jumped out of his skin to see Rebecca right behind him. Before he could say anything, she blurted out, “Are you just planning to leave me here on my own?”
Shawn stared at her, completely lost. “What?”
“You told your assistant to book a flight to London for this afternoon. One ticket. So you’re going back, but what about me? I’m just supposed to stay here? If you think you can just drop me and run, you’re dreaming!” Her voice was cold and sharp.
Shawn was so stunned, his throat went dry. For a second, he almost thought she was jealous.
