When Rebecca answered, Cindy’s heart gave a little jolt. So it was true. Rebecca had been hurt so badly that she just didn’t want to date anymore. Cindy couldn’t help feeling sorry for her. She always thought Rebecca and her brother would have made such a great couple. They were both such good people, but somehow, love had been cruel to them.
Everyone says it’s tough to bounce back after a heartbreak. It seemed like Rebecca wouldn’t be joining their family after all. What a shame.
After dinner, the two of them wandered over to the mall. Cindy insisted on getting Rebecca a present. Rebecca tried to refuse a few times, but in the end, she had no choice but to give in.
They walked into a fancy designer store. “Pick anything you like,” Cindy said, grinning as if money was no object.
Rebecca glanced at the huge ‘H’ logo and pressed her lips together. Even a decent sales bonus probably wouldn’t be enough for the smallest wallet here.
She swallowed and turned to the saleswoman. “How much are the scarves?”
The saleswoman smiled. “Anywhere from two to seven thousand.”
Rebecca hesitated for a second, then said, “Can I see one of the two-thousand ones, please?”
Cindy, on the other hand, shopped without a care in the world. By the time they left, they were loaded down with bags. Cindy had bought so much that Rebecca had to help carry half of it.
Once they stepped outside, Cindy let out a happy sigh. “I haven’t shopped like this in ages. This is just more fun with your girlfriends.”
Cindy needed to use the restroom, so she handed all her bags to Rebecca. “Hold these for me, would you? I’ll be right back.”
Rebecca waited outside, arms full of shopping bags. When she looked up, she suddenly found herself face-to-face with two people she knew.
Lottie and Sonja were there to pick out a gift for a client. Before their meeting, Sonja had brought Lottie to the mall to find something nice. It was just bad luck that they ran into Rebecca.
Lottie was startled at first, but then she remembered that Rebecca had quit, while she herself had been promoted to Sonjal’s assistant. Why should she be the one to feel awkward? If anything, shouldn’t the unemployed person be embarrassed?
With that thought, Lottie lifted her chin and met Rebecca’s eyes.
“Lottie,” Sonja stepped in, trying to calm things down. “If Ms. Harper wants to be left alone, let’s not bother her.”
Then Sonja turned to Rebecca. “Goodbye.”
As they left, Sonja couldn’t help but sneak a glance at all the shopping bags in Rebecca’s hands. The bright ‘H’ logo was impossible to miss. Sonja arched an eyebrow. Rebecca’s salary wasn’t that high—how could she afford designer brands? Had she really managed to snag Stephen?
No way. Stephen was famous for being cold and distant. He’d never been seen with a girl all these years. Rebecca was pretty, but getting close to Stephen was nearly impossible.
Even Sonja had tried and failed. She’d been interested in Stephen at first, but after the Campbell family let it slip that Stephen already had a girlfriend and wasn’t interested in her, she had to settle for an engagement with his cousin.
If Stephen didn’t want her, there was no way he’d go for Rebecca. Unless… Rebecca had hooked up with someone else. Sonja remembered that night in the private room. Other than Stephen, none of the men there were anything special.
A sly smirk tugged at Sonja’s lips.
