Judy rolled her eyes and gave Paul a look. "No wonder your parents keep trying to set you up. Seriously, you still don't know what period cramps are? Rebecca got her period, Paul. That's why she's in pain."
Paul's cheeks instantly turned red. He remembered how he’d just tried to march Rebecca off to the hospital, and the whole thing suddenly felt so awkward. Rebecca was a little embarrassed too. It was her first time talking about this in front of a guy she barely knew, and of all people, he was her ex-boyfriend’s best friend.
“I should get going,” Rebecca said, holding her stomach and turning to leave.
But Paul called after her. “Wait here for a second, I’ll be right back.” He reached over and ruffled Judy’s hair. “Help Rebecca into the car and wait for me.”
Then he took off, running so fast he practically disappeared.
Judy was quick to do as he said. “Rebecca, come on, let’s just wait in the car. It’s freezing out here.”
“It’s fine,” Rebecca said, hesitating. She was worried about messing up Paul’s car.
“Don’t worry,” Judy said, smiling. “I’ve got a scarf in my bag. Besides, if he comes back and I’m not in the car, he’s going to lose it.”
Rebecca sighed. She didn’t want to argue, so she let Judy pull her into the back seat. The car was way warmer than being outside.
Five minutes later, Paul came jogging back, out of breath and holding a paper bag. Rebecca and Judy stepped out to meet him.
He handed the bag to Rebecca. “This is for you.”
Rebecca could guess what was inside. She looked up at him and offered a quiet, “Thanks.”
Paul just shrugged. “No problem.” He turned to Judy, giving her shoulder a little pat. “Let’s go.”
Back in the car, Judy made a face and mumbled, “No wonder you’re still single.”
Paul caught her in the rearview mirror and grinned. “What are you whispering back there?”
Judy sounded way older than she was. “You should’ve just asked Rebecca if she wanted a ride. You knew she wasn’t feeling well. Why’d you leave her out there by herself?”
Paul hesitated, his expression unreadable for a second. “Let me do it. She might need it sooner. A week’s kind of a long time.”
Judy handed it over. “Alright, here. You’re making a big deal out of a keychain.”
She waved goodbye to him, and Paul waved back. “I’ll pick you up again next week.”
Judy blinked. “Wait, what?”
But Paul had already driven off.
As Judy stood there, her mom, Alexis, came outside and found her staring off at the road. Alexis nudged her arm. “You’re making Paul drive you home again? We have a driver, you know. Next time, let him pick you up. Paul’s busy at work. Don’t bother him all the time.”
Judy frowned. “I’m not the one bothering him. He offered to pick me up.”
