Kevin silently locked eyes with Carson for several long seconds before finally furrowing his small brow and asking, “What is it?”
Gazing at his older brother, Carson felt a wave of hesitation, but in the end, he lowered his voice and softly murmured, “Have you… have you been alright lately? Since we look so much alike, does she get angry when she sees you? Does she dislike you, too?” What Carson really wanted to ask was whether Ariana was still angry with *him*.
But he couldn’t bring himself to say it directly, so he’d taken a roundabout approach.
For someone like Carson, whose thought processes were usually straightforward, even this small attempt at subtlety was a significant mental struggle.
Kevin’s brow remained slightly knitted. He studied his younger brother at a leisurely pace and replied, “*You’re* the one who looks like *me*. And who, exactly, are you trying to ask about?”
Carson’s face flushed bright red in an instant. He stared at his brother, flustered and unsure what to do, before finally stammering, “I—I wasn’t trying to ask about anyone.”
Kevin found Carson’s behavior a bit odd today.
But he had no intention of pondering it deeply. After hearing the answer, he simply gave an “Oh,” and turned his attention back to his book. His expression was completely relaxed, clearly in a good mood. Carson, seeing how dense his usually perceptive brother was being today, felt a pang of frustration and disappointment.
After wrestling with his thoughts, he finally slumped back into his own seat. His small face fell, crestfallen and dejected.
Shortly after, their teacher arrived to begin the lesson.
Even though all the children in this kindergarten were very young, the instruction here was formal and serious. It wasn’t like an ordinary kindergarten where teachers mainly watched over the children and occasionally taught them to recognize a few characters. Carson and Kevin’s kindergarten was practically run like an elementary school.
The main differences were a greater number of handicraft and elective classes, designed to keep the children from growing bored.
Otherwise, it was nearly the same.
Carson was listless for nearly the entire class, which surprised even the teacher who usually kept a close eye on him. To be honest, Carson was the most unruly student in the class. He was always bouncing around as if he had endless energy, giving the teacher a headache every single day. Yet, she couldn’t afford to offend him—after all, he was a child of the Stone family.
So, day after day, she engaged in a battle of wits with him, trying every trick to get him to sit still and absorb even a little bit of the lesson.
But today was different.
His behavior was so out of character that it left the teacher astonished. Not only did he not daydream or randomly raise his hand to answer questions based on his own flawed understanding, but he didn’t even cause any trouble. If it weren’t for the fact that Kevin was also in the classroom, the teacher might have wondered whether it was Kevin instead of Carson.
This unusual behavior lasted until the end of the school day.
Only then did Carson seem to come back to life, his energy suddenly restored.
The teacher felt it was necessary to say something to Carson’s driver, so that the driver could relay the message to his parents. Whether they took it seriously or not was beyond her control, but she had to speak up. Otherwise, if something went wrong, she would be the one to bear the consequences.
…
Kevin hoisted his small backpack and headed outside. Noticing this, Carson quickly followed.
After trailing behind for a while, Kevin sensed something was off. He stopped and turned to look at his younger brother, who had been following him the whole time. “Is there something you need?” he asked.
Carson froze for a moment, then replied a bit too loudly, with a hint of guilt and unease, “No, nothing! Why do you ask?”
Kevin pressed, “Don’t you usually hate walking with me?” Lately, Carson had been avoiding him—not sitting with him in class, not seeking him out during breaks, and even eating separately. Let alone walking home together after school.
Even if it was just a short distance, Kevin could tell that his brother was deliberately leaving at different times to avoid him.
