The next morning dawned bright and clear.
For once, Lambert hadn’t left for the office at the crack of dawn. When Ariana entered the dining room after waking up, she found him already seated, casually flipping through a newspaper as if waiting for her. Surprised, she asked, “You’re not going to the company today?”
Lambert replied without looking up, “No.”
He tossed the newspaper aside and turned his attention to her. “The doctor is coming today. I’ve asked him to check on Gracie’s condition.”
Ariana nodded in agreement—it was an important matter.
Then he added, “She’ll also examine you.”
Ariana chuckled lightly. “What’s there to check? I’m perfectly fine.”
Lambert’s expression remained firm. “Have you forgotten fainting from anemia last time? I want the doctor to reexamine you to make sure there are no underlying issues. Suppose everything’s fine, great. If not, we can address it early.”
Though amused, Ariana recognized his concern and didn’t protest further. “Alright, alright, I’ll get checked,” she said, her tone almost placating, as if soothing a child.
Lambert’s eyebrow twitched slightly at her indulgent tone.
Just then, the children trooped into the dining room. Lucian and the others froze when they saw their father still at home, their expressions clearly asking, 'Why is Dad still here?' Among them, Carson looked the most startled, his surprise tinged with a hint of dread—like a mouse stumbling upon a cat.
Lambert shot them a cool glance and said flatly, “Sit down and eat.”
Ariana: "..."
The three little ones immediately stopped dawdling and scurried to their seats. Carson even dared a cautious glance at Lambert.
Breakfast was simple: milk, sandwiches, and a fried egg.
Carson picked up his sandwich absently, chewing without tasting it. Lucian and Kevin each took two sandwich halves, eating in silence. The dining table was so quiet you could hear a pin drop—no one dared speak, and even their chewing was consciously softened.
Lambert’s authority as a father weighed too heavily on them; the slightest noise might provoke his displeasure.
Ariana glanced silently at her sons, then shifted her gaze to their father. The esteemed CEO seemed to be enjoying his breakfast quite thoroughly.
After a brief pause, she spoke up. "So, are you not going to the office today?"
Lambert nodded slightly. "No, not today."
Ariana’s eyes curved slowly, a flicker of playful teasing in their depths. She cleared her throat lightly. "In that case, why don’t you take the children to school later? The driver happens to be unavailable today."
Lambert: "…"
Their three sons: "…"
"Well?" Ariana pressed on with a smile. She’d begun to notice something: Lucian, Kevin, and Carson were all somewhat afraid of Lambert. While Carson’s fear was understandable, she couldn’t quite figure out why their eldest son seemed intimidated, too—especially since Lambert usually showed him a little more affection.
Besides, when Lucian was younger, he’d often clung to Lambert.
Unlike the present moment.
A subtle chill now lingered in the curve of her eyes and brows.
This was not a good sign.
