Well…
It wasn’t that Ariana minded, exactly—she just felt a little awkward about the whole situation.
So when the doctor said that, she couldn’t help but clear her throat dryly and reply with a touch of resignation, “It’s fine. You’re just doing your job.”
The doctor visibly relaxed, his appreciation for Ariana growing even more.
He smiled warmly and said, “That concludes today’s examination. Both the mother and baby are in excellent health. However, Madam, given your previous history of anemia, it would be best to have someone accompany you when you go out from now on. Anemia can range from mild to severe—sometimes it’s just dizziness, but in serious cases, it could even be life-threatening.”
Ariana nodded. “Alright, I understand.”
Seeing that she’d taken his advice to heart, the doctor didn’t press further. He began packing up his equipment slowly, preparing to leave.
Just then, Lambert returned.
Dropping the child off shouldn’t have taken nearly an hour, but since the two schools were in opposite directions, it had ended up taking a bit longer.
Lambert glanced at the doctor. “Is the checkup finished?”
“Yes,” the doctor replied. “Both Madam and the young lady are perfectly healthy. Just ensure she gets plenty of rest moving forward.”
“Mm,” Lambert acknowledged.
“Well then, Mr. Stone, I’ll take my leave now.”
“Go ahead.”
On the surface, it seemed like an ordinary conversation, but the silent exchange between Lambert and the doctor conveyed much more. A subtle flicker in Lambert’s eyes signaled the doctor to wait for him at the hospital—he needed to personally discuss Ariana’s condition.
Having served the Stone family for many years, the doctor was no stranger to Lambert’s ways. A certain understanding had developed between them. He understood the unspoken message and gave an almost imperceptible nod of acknowledgment.
After the doctor left, Lambert approached Ariana’s bedside. He glanced at their daughter, who blinked up at him playfully, before turning his attention to Ariana. “The office just called—something urgent came up,” he said, his voice low. “I need to head back to the company for a while.”
Ariana looked surprised. “So suddenly?”
“Mm, there’s an issue with one of the projects,” he replied evenly.
“Go ahead, then,” she said, understanding. Having once managed the White Corporation herself, she was all too familiar with such emergencies. In fact, she’d need to check on Kiara at the company soon, too—she wondered how the little one was managing on her own.
So she understood completely.
Lambert gently brushed a strand of hair from her forehead, his voice softening to a husky whisper. “If you go to the White Corporation later, don’t overexert yourself.”
Ariana blinked, a faint smile touching her lips. “Alright.”
“I’ll be going, then.” He leaned in and pressed a light kiss to her forehead.
She cleared her throat softly, a faint blush rising to her cheeks. “…Mm.”
Only after Lambert had left did Ariana lift a hand to her warm face, her expression a mix of amusement and mild exasperation. A trace of conflict and subtle complexity flickered in her eyes. Was it her imagination, or had Lambert been increasingly…affectionate lately? Not that she minded exactly—it was just a little embarrassing.
After all, they’d been married for years. Weren’t they supposed to be past all that?
But then again, they were husband and wife—what was there to be afraid of?
Ariana’s expression shifted for a long moment before she finally sighed and pushed the thought aside, deciding not to dwell on it any further.
She called for the nannies and asked them to look after Grace for a while, as she planned to change clothes and head to the White Corporation.
She still couldn’t shake her concern for Kiara in her current state.
The nannies, already familiar with the routine, quickly assured her that they would take good care of the child.
