Rebecca had already decided she’d just keep things cordial with Lottie. No drama, just surface-level peace.

Lottie pouted and gave a little nod, letting her know she got the message.

Once Lottie left, Rebecca headed to her room and buried herself in her studies.

Five minutes later, Samantha knocked and slipped in. She glanced at Rebecca, quiet for a second, then asked, “Are you and Bruce really over? There’s no chance at all?”

Samantha knew her daughter too well. If Rebecca still cared about Bruce, she wouldn’t have hugged some stranger, even if it was just for business. If she really did, that could only mean one thing.

Rebecca’s eyebrows shot up. “Mom, I was clear last time. Bruce and I are done, completely done. Please don’t bring him up at home anymore.”

“Okay, I get it.” Samantha said gently before closing the door and letting out a long sigh.

The next day, Rebecca had barely settled in at the office when her mom called, panic in her voice. Lottie had been in a car accident. She needed Rebecca at the hospital, now.

Rebecca’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly handed off her work and drove straight to the hospital.

When she opened the door to the hospital room, Samantha was sitting by the bed, helping Lottie drink some water.

Lottie looked up and caught the worried look on Rebecca’s face. She couldn’t help but feel a little smug. No matter how bad last night’s fight was, Rebecca still saw her as a sister. She’d dropped everything at work and rushed over.

“Is it bad?” Rebecca asked, dropping her bag and walking over.

“It’s not too serious. She got hit by a delivery guy on a sccoter,” Samantha explained.

As soon as she mentioned the accident, Lottie’s face twisted in anger. “Those poor people, seriously. All they care about is making a little money, don’t even care if they hurt someone.”

Samantha frowned. In her mind, everyone was just trying to get by. She didn’t like hearing Lottie talk like that, but since she was hurt, Samantha just tried to soothe her. “Alright, drink some more water, okay?”

Rebecca glanced around the room and noticed no one from the Bernan family was there.
