Still, Lottie knew Rebecca better than anyone. She might seem gentle, but underneath, she was stubborn and stuck to her own rules. There was no way Rebecca would come back just for a few perks.
And Lottie understood why Rebecca was so set on leaving. Losing out on that VP position was part of it, but the real reason was Bruce and his attitude. Sonja, on the other hand, had no idea. She was so kind. If she ever found out that Bruce had cheated because of her, she would probably storm out and quit. If Sonja left, what would Lottie do? Things were finally starting to turn around at work for her. She couldn’t let it all fall apart. Rebecca couldn’t come back, and Sonja definitely couldn’t find out about Rebecca and Mr. Lamont’s history.
“So, Lottie, can you do it?” Sonja asked again, her voice gentle.
“Oh, sure. I’ll give it a try,” Lottie replied, just saying what Sonja wanted to hear.
Once she was out of the hospital, Sonja called Bruce. “Bruce, I’ve been thinking. Using the non-compete to force Ms. Harper back isn’t really the best idea. Maybe we should let Lottie try to talk her into coming back. If she changes her mind, that would be great.”
Bruce sounded relieved. “That’s a much better idea. You always think things through.”
“By the way, do you have any plans this weekend? If not, why don’t you come over? My mom’s friend sent us some lobsters, and she remembered you love them.”
A smile tugged at Bruce’s lips, warmth spreading through him. “That sounds great. Thank your mom for me.”
“No need to be so polite. Soon, it’s going to be—” She stopped herself, but Bruce already knew what she was hinting at.
After the call ended, Sonja’s smile slowly faded. She was just about to get in her car when her phone rang again.
She picked up. “Hello?”
Her assistant was practically yelling. “Sonja, something’s happened! You need to come back right away!”
Sonja’s heart skipped a beat. “What’s wrong?”
“There’s a girl at the office, making a huge scene. She’s saying you stole her boyfriend and got him fired.”
Meanwhile, over at Sunforge Tech, Rebecca was already at work. She’d just finished back-to-back meetings with Mitch and Greg, the heads of delivery and R&D. The Meridian Tech contract was still being hammered out by the lawyers, but the most urgent thing now was figuring out the staffing.
Rebecca didn’t have much authority to move people. Most of the team still reported to Mitch and Greg. When she asked for help, both of them said the same thing: they had no one to spare.
