“Sonja, you’re honestly too nice for your own good. That’s why people keep walking all over you,” Bruce said with a sigh.
“Alright. If you really don’t want to owe him anything, I’ll drop it. I won’t go after his girlfriend for spreading lies, but she has to post a public apology online. Everybody needs to see that.”
“Okay, that works,” Sonja replied, nodding with relief.
As soon as Sonja stepped out of Bruce’s office, her face changed. She looked icy and distant. Scott was seriously useless. He couldn’t even handle his own girlfriend, and he still wanted to mess around like he was some kind of player. She must have been blind to ever trust him. At least Bruce hadn’t picked up on anything suspicious.
When she got downstairs and headed toward her own office, her phone rang. It was Lottie calling, sounding frantic and a little too loud.
“Sonja, are you alright? I just watched that video online. How could Scott’s girlfriend just make stuff up like that? Saying you tried to sleep with him... she’s delusional!”
Sonja frowned. Another idiot. Still, she just kept her tone light. “It’s fine now. The police have already taken her away. I believe the truth will come out. I’ll be cleared.”
“Yes, totally, I’m with you. If you need me to testify, just say the word.”
Sonja covered her phone and spoke quietly. “Don’t worry about that. You need to take care of yourself in the hospital. And Lottie, remember, don’t mention our private meeting with Scott to anyone. He’s been fired for commercial bribery.”
Lottie gasped. “Wait, did they find out about that gift we gave him?”
“No, I checked. It wasn’t about that gift. Anyway, it’s over now. Let’s not bring it up again.”
“Got it. Don’t worry, I won’t say a thing.”
“Hey, baby, long time no see. Did you miss me?” The man’s voice was smooth and dangerous, the kind that could pull anyone in. But Sonja had heard it so many times she was immune.
She frowned. “Don’t call me that.”
“Oh, really? What should I call you then? Feels like I’ve never called you anything else,” Shawn teased, raising an eyebrow. He’d just finished showering, his bathrobe barely hanging on, looking way too tempting.
Sonja held up the file in her hand. “I need a favor. Same deal as always. I’ll pay you, no questions asked.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Didn’t we end our arrangement six months ago?”
“Don’t ask. Just tell me if you want the job or not.”
