Shawn flashed a perfect smile, lips curving in that way that always seemed just a little too tempting. “I’m in. Not just for business, but for anything else you want.”
Sonja didn’t bother responding to his hint. She hung up, snapped a few photos of the documents, and sent them over.
“Give me directions for product updates based on market demand,” she messaged him. “I want something with real insight, not just the usual stuff.”
He replied almost instantly with an OK emoji.
No one knew how good Shawn was better than Sonja did. He was the one who had helped her finish her thesis and get her papers published back in the day.
Outside, the city was just starting to light up. Sonja stood by the window, arms folded, staring into the evening glow.
Honestly, having Shawn around to help wasn’t such a bad idea. But then she thought about the way he did things. Shawn was unpredictable. He was the kind of man you couldn’t really control, and if you tried, he’d slip out of your grasp before you even knew it. Besides, he was based overseas, which just made everything more complicated.
No, it was still better to get Rebecca back. She could put Rebecca in charge of reporting directly to her. All it would take was more money. People who came from nothing cared about money most of all. Just pay her enough and everything would be fine.
And Bruce… Sonja was sure Bruce wasn’t stupid. He’d know what the smart choice was.
That night, Rebecca was at home, reviewing her notes, when her phone rang. It was Cindy.
“Girl, you won’t believe it. Sonja totally handled that woman from the video this morning. Not only did she get her to apologize, but it was also a public apology. Now the internet is back to calling Sonja the ‘most pretty Ph.D.’ or whatever. Can you believe it?”
Cindy sent a screenshot of the news as she spoke.
Rebecca pulled her phone away from her ear and checked the message. As soon as she saw the apology addressed to Ms. Sonja and NovaStack Cloud, she knew Bruce was behind it. He always believed Sonja was innocent, no questions asked. He’d probably gotten the legal team involved just to clear her name.
“I just wanted to say, landing that Meridian Tech deal in your first month is incredible. My whole team’s been talking about it. We’ve also heard you’re great at negotiations, product development, even coding. Honestly, it’s an honor to work with someone like you.”
He really poured on the praise. Not bad for a guy from engineering. But Rebecca knew this was just the warm-up. There was a real reason he was here.
She poured him some tea. “Thanks for the compliment, Mitch. But I get the feeling there’s something else you want to talk about.”
Mitch rubbed his hands together, looking a little awkward. “About your request to borrow some staff—after thinking about it, I realized I made a mistake.”
“Oh?” Rebecca raised her brows, a small smile tugging at her lips. She motioned for him to sit down, letting him know she had plenty of time.
“Yeah, so, I went over our project schedules again. Turns out we have three old projects that are almost done. If things go well, they’ll finish by the end of the month. That means we’ll have a few people freed up. Here’s the list of who’ll be available.”
