Mitch handed the list to Rebecca.
She skimmed through it. As she expected, it was the team from those three previous projects. Rebecca set the paper down, her face giving nothing away.
“I wonder if they actually want to come over to the Meridian Tech project,” she said. “If they don’t want to, forcing them just doesn’t feel right.”
“They would love to!” Mitch jumped in before she finished. “Absolutely, they’re all for it. We’re all here for the company. Why wouldn’t they want to help out?”
A small smile tugged at Rebecca’s lips. Mitch really knew how to read the room. He could push, he could pull. The fact that he was willing to swallow his pride for his people said a lot. He wasn’t a bad guy. Definitely someone worth keeping around.
Once she’d made up her mind, Rebecca nodded. “Alright. Over the next couple days, have them start getting familiar with the new project. When their previous projects wrap up, they can switch over officially.”
Mitch bowed his head, mumbling a few thanks, then slipped out and closed the door behind him.
With Mitch sorted out, Rebecca settled in to wait. There was still Greg. But no matter how long she waited, he didn’t show up.
Later, Justin knocked on her door. He asked if she wanted him to crank up the rumors, make things sound more serious.
Rebecca shook her head. No need. Mitch had come running to her so quickly, which meant the people who needed to know already knew. The ones who hadn’t shown up just weren’t ready to face reality yet. She wasn’t in any hurry. Just let them stew for a couple more days.
Rebecca’s guess was right. Greg and his team were seriously stressing.
That evening, the R&D group worked late and then decided to grab dinner together. Behind the closed door of their private room, Leo, one of the team leads, let out a long sigh.
Greg was quiet for a bit, then tried to calm everyone down. “Justin’s just trying to scare us. Don’t worry about it. Rebecca wouldn’t dare fire us.”
Someone at the table muttered under their breath. Easy for you to say. If anyone gets fired, it’ll be us, not you.
Leo was braver. He frowned and shot back, “Why wouldn’t she? Didn’t you say she’s involved with Mr. Duncan? If he’s supporting her, there’s nothing she wouldn’t do.”
Greg had nothing to say to that. The joke he’d made earlier was coming back to bite him.
He cleared his throat. “I’m telling you, she won’t. Let’s just eat and get back to work.”
No one argued, but you could tell everyone was lost in their own thoughts, quietly weighing their options.
