The way he said it made things pretty clear. He and Sonja were official. He had agreed, simple as that.
Still, he just couldn’t get Rebecca out of his head.
Morris knew Bruce and Rebecca had been together for years, but they’d never actually slept together. For Bruce, it wasn’t about love anymore. It was just pride. If Rebecca ever tried to come back, he would probably give her a hard time, just to get even, then toss her aside without a second thought.
Once Morris figured that out, he grinned, lifted his glass, and toasted Bruce. “I’m happy for you and Sonja.”
On the other side of the table, Paul was busy on his phone. Rebecca had messaged him five minutes ago.
[Dinner tomorrow at seven. Meet you at this restaurant.] She’d sent a link to a small bistro. Paul checked it out and noticed the prices were pretty steep.
He thought for a second before replying, “There’s a new local spot that’s really good. Let’s go there instead. I’ll send you the address.”
One of his distant cousin ran the place, and he’d already told Paul to bring friends for a nice discount. After seeing Rebecca and her mom at the hospital, Paul had asked his uncle for more details. He learned that Samantha’s condition needed long-term meds and regular checkups. There might even be more surgeries down the road.
Rebecca was probably struggling with money. As much as he wanted to see her, he didn’t want her spending a lot just to have dinner with him.
Rebecca texted back quickly. “Sounds good. See you tomorrow night.”
“See you tomorrow night,” he replied.
Before he could lock his phone, Morris leaned over and caught a glimpse of the screen.
“Who are you texting?” Morris asked, his voice teasing.
Bruce set his glass down and looked over too.
