“Mom, let me help you.”
“It’s okay. You must be tired after a whole day of studying. Go relax in the living room with Lottie, watch some TV. I’ve got this.”
Rebecca glanced over at Lottie, who was giggling at the TV, completely absorbed. She stayed where she was, leaning back against the kitchen counter. “Are you really sure about Lottie moving back in?”
A few days earlier, Lottie had been in a car accident. After a quick hospital stay, she was discharged that morning. Rebecca had assumed she’d head back to the Bernan family to recover, but instead, Lottie called Samantha. She said the Bernans hadn’t even bothered to visit her after the accident, and that she didn’t want to go back there. She asked if she could stay at the Harpers’ house instead.
Samantha had always wanted her to move back anyway, so when Lottie brought it up herself, she was delighted. She took a cab to the hospital that morning and brought her home.
“What’s going on? Did you and Lottie have an argument?” Samantha paused from kneading dough and looked at her daughter. She couldn’t shake the feeling that the two girls weren’t as close as they used to be.
Rebecca lowered her eyes. “Nothing like that. I was just asking. You’re still recovering, and you already let the housekeeper go. Now you have to look after Lottie. I’m just worried about your health.”
So that was it. Samantha waved her off. “I’m fine, really. Don’t worry about me.”
She took a breath and kept going. “Lottie never really fit in with the Bernans. Now that she’s hurt, there’s no telling how they’ll treat her. Let her stay here and recover for a bit. She can go back when she’s better.”
“Alright, Mom.”
Rebecca’s only real concern was her mother. As long as Lottie kept treating Samantha kindly, like she used to, Rebecca wouldn’t call her out. Her mom was getting older, she’d just been sick, and there was no way she could handle more stress.
The two of them worked side by side, filling a whole oven with pies.
They didn’t call Lottie to the table until the pies were ready. Only then did she finally turn off the TV.
