During her hospital stay, Sonja kept telling her over and over that she had to find a way to talk Rebecca into coming back to NovaStack Cloud. Lottie really didn’t want to get involved, but Sonja bugged her about it every single day. Eventually, Lottie gave in and agreed to stay with Samantha to recover, partly so Sonja would stop nagging. But honestly, her main goal was to figure out what Rebecca was actually doing at Sunforge Tech and see if she could talk her into returning to their old company.
Now she knew: Rebecca was just a junior salesperson at Sunforge Tech, nothing special, nothing that important.
So, Lottie went straight to the point. “Have you even thought about going back to NovaStack Cloud? Sonja said if you come back, she’ll let everything go and even give you a raise. You’d definitely make more than you do at Sunforge Tech.”
Rebecca frowned. “Did Sonja put you up to this?”
Lottie’s fork jerked a little. Rebecca really picked up on things fast, but she wasn’t about to admit the truth. “No. I’m only saying this because I care about you. I wouldn’t bother if it was anyone else.”
Rebecca’s voice was calm, almost cold. “Then you should treat me like you would anyone else.”
Lottie was so mad she slammed her fork down on the table. “Mom, did you hear that? Look at how Rebecca talks to me!” She grabbed Samantha’s arm and complained, playing the victim.
Samantha let out a sigh. “Rebecca, is that any way to talk to your sister? She’s younger than you. You should try to be more patient with her.”
Then she turned to Lottie. “Lottie, it just isn’t realistic for Rebecca to go back. You know she didn’t quit because of the money. It was because she and Bruce broke up. If Rebecca goes back, how is she supposed to face him?”
Lottie went quiet. Honestly, she didn’t want Rebecca going back either. Since it was clear Rebecca wouldn’t budge, Lottie decided to drop it. If Sonja asked, she’d just blame it all on Rebecca anyway.
After dinner, Rebecca helped her mom wash the dishes, then disappeared into her room to study. Lottie sat on the couch munching fruit, curiosity getting the better of her. “What’s she doing in her room so early?” she asked.
