As Lottie was about to turn away, something caught her eye—a file wedged between the shelves. She yanked it out on instinct, only to realize it was an employment contract. Her gaze landed on the company name: Sunforge Tech. The employee listed was Rebecca.
She flipped it open. When she saw the job title—Chief Executive Officer—Lottie’s eyes went wide. CEO? Rebecca was the CEO at Sunforge Tech? She’d always assumed Rebecca was just another salesperson.
Lottie could hardly believe it! How could Stephen trust Rebecca, who only had five years of work experience, to run a subsidiary? Was he out of his mind?
She kept reading, and when she spotted Rebecca’s annual salary and all those stock options, jealousy bubbled up inside her. Why did Rebecca always end up with the best of everything? What did Rebecca have that she didn’t? Lottie knew her own family background was much better. However, when it came to dating, none of her college boyfriends could compare to Bruce. And after graduation, the best job she could land was some admin gig.
It was so unfair. Lottie refused to accept it.
She flung the contract to the floor and started stomping on it with her good foot, over and over, until she felt a little better. Then, worried about getting caught, she scooped up the contract, brushed off the dust, and got ready to put it back where she’d found it.
That’s when she noticed two more documents hidden on the shelf. Curious, she pulled them out. They turned out to be another agreement, still between Sunforge Tech and Rebecca. This time, something didn’t add up. The agreement was signed before Rebecca had even left her old job.
A lightbulb went off in Lottie’s head. Rebecca had been scheming with Sunforge Tech before she even quit her last job. She might not know much about labor laws, but even Lottie could tell this was shady. Rebecca could get sued and ruin her reputation. At worst, she could end up paying so much she’d lose everything.
A sly smirk crept across Lottie’s face as she pulled out her phone and started snapping pictures. Evidence in hand, she quietly slipped out of Rebecca’s bedroom and put the key back where it belonged.
Meanwhile, at the Campbell house, things were buzzing. The whole staff was running around getting ready because Sonja’s potential husband was coming over for a lobster feast. Avery had been up before sunrise, planning the menu and sending the cook out shopping for fresh ingredients.
Avery felt a wave of relief. Her gamble was paying off.
Soon, lunch was ready. Avery brought out a platter of lobster herself and handed the biggest one to Bruce.
“Thank you,” Bruce said.
Then she gave one to her daughter. Alan, expecting his wife to serve him, held out his plate, but Avery pretended not to notice. He put his plate down awkwardly and reached over to get one for himself.
Bruce caught the whole scene and paused for a moment, surprised. He’d always known Avery held much more in the family, and Alan even took Avery’s last name, but he’d assumed Avery adored him. Now, seeing how things really were, he realized life in a wealthy family wasn’t nearly as perfect as it looked. After a moment, he looked away, deciding not to get involved in their complicated world.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
