After lunch, Bruce and Sonja sat with Avery, chatting for a while. It hadn’t even been half an hour before Avery noticed Sonja zoning out at her phone. Smiling at her daughter, she said, “Don’t just sit here talking. Why don’t you take Bruce out for a walk?”
Sonja slipped her phone away and glanced at Bruce. “The scenery’s really nice around here. Wanna go check it out?”
“Sure,” Bruce said, getting up. The two of them headed outside together.
When they were gone, Avery finally let out a long breath. She turned and went upstairs to her study with Alan quietly following behind her. Once inside, Alan closed the door and sat across from her, looking a little anxious.
“So, you’re trying to set Sonja up with Bruce, aren’t you?” he asked, unable to hide his impatience.
Avery shot him a look. “Obviously.” She introduced Bruce at the birthday party and even invited him over today all for Sonja.
“But the Lamonts are just as powerful as we are. There’s no way their son would agree to take the Campbells’ last name.”
“How do you know he wouldn’t? From what I can tell, he’s crazy about Sonja. If she asked for it, I bet he’d say yes.”
“Even if he wanted to, the Lamonts would never go for it.”
Avery waved her hand, already losing patience. “Nothing’s even happened yet, so why are you getting worked up? I have work to do. If you don’t have anything else, just leave me.”
Alan sighed. He looked like he wanted to say more but ended up keeping quiet. He left the study and stood outside for a long time, lost in thought.
Truthfully, he wanted a child with Avery—a child that belonged just to the two of them. But after all these years, Avery still wouldn’t agree.
He pulled out his wallet and slid out a photo he’d kept hidden away for a long time. Whenever the pain in his heart got too much, he’d take it out and look at it. She would be old enough to get married by now. Maybe she already was. If she was, did that mean he was going to be a grandfather? He tried not to think about it. The more he thought, the heavier his heart felt. Alan tucked the wallet away and trudged back to the bedroom.
