Thanks to Caleb’s tutoring, math was a breeze. Everything was coming back to her, and the major-specific courses were always her comfort zone. After wrapping up her study session, she stretched and glanced at her bookshelf. That’s when she noticed two books out of order, right in the middle. She hadn’t touched the shelf in ages, so someone else must have been snooping.
She pulled out the misplaced books and some papers tucked between them. Sure enough, it was the contract with Sunforge Tech and the old agreements. Instantly, she knew who had been poking around. Rebecca crouched down and reached for the stack of documents at the bottom of the shelf. These were the papers she’d signed when she joined NovaStack Cloud, including her employment contract and that so-called “non-compete agreement” Bruce always brought up.
She locked everything away in her cabinet. Her confidence came from the details buried in those documents. If NovaStack Cloud tried to sue her, she knew she wouldn’t lose. The answer was right there, clear as day. Sonja and Lottie had never bothered to read the fine print. They just thought a little leverage would be enough to scare her off. Well, let them try. If it came to a showdown, she was ready to embarrass them in front of everyone.
The next morning, Rebecca sat at the breakfast table with Samantha and Lottie. Lottie’s leg was healing, and she could walk again. Samantha looked at her and asked, “So, when are you heading back to work?”
Lottie hesitated and mumbled, “My boss told me to take a few more days off, so there’s no rush.” Rebecca arched an eyebrow. Clearly, Sonja wanted Lottie to stay home and dig up more dirt. Fine. Let them play their little games.
After finishing her milk, Rebecca turned to her mom. “I’m heading out of town for work today. I leave this afternoon and I’ll be back in three days.”
Samantha sighed. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? I haven’t even packed anything for you.” She started to get up but Rebecca caught her hand, smiling. “It’s all done, Mom. I packed already.”
After breakfast, Rebecca wheeled her suitcase to the car and drove off to the office. Before leaving, she made sure to leave her bedroom door unlocked this time. In a barely noticeable corner of her room, she’d hidden a tiny camera.
While waiting at a traffic light, she opened the camera app on her phone. The live feed popped up, showing Lottie sneaking into her room the moment Samantha’s back was turned. Rebecca couldn’t help but grin. This time, Lottie walked in like it was nothing. She probably thought Rebecca was just careless.
