Cindy’s face dropped, her bright eyes suddenly turning icy. Austin, the general manager of Northbridge Partners, was completely oblivious to the mood. He greeted them with a big smile. “You’re finally here. Come on, let me introduce everyone. This is Mr. Lamont and Dr. Campbell from NovaStack Cloud.” He turned to the other side of the table. “Mr. Lamont, Dr. Campbell, they are—”
Before he could finish, Sonja cut in with a friendly smile. “Thanks, Austin. We already know each other.”
Austin looked surprised for a second, then laughed it off. “Right, you’re all from Coralbridge and in the same industry. Makes sense you’d have met.”
Rebecca had expected a coincidence or two, but not something this on the nose. Same day for a business trip, same flight, and now they were sitting across from each other meeting the same client.
Once everyone sat down, Cindy leaned in with a pout, lowering her voice. “Seriously, I think someone inside our company is leaking information.”
Rebecca frowned. She was thinking the same thing. But this wasn’t the time to dwell on it. She opened her laptop and pulled up the proposal she’d prepped in advance.
“Do you want to go first, or should I?” Rebecca looked at Bruce across the table.
Her gaze made Bruce’s eyes darken, his expression even colder. There was nothing warm or familiar about the way she looked at him. No hint of jealousy, no spark that lovers usually have. Bruce almost wished he could see a little jealousy or anger in her eyes. At least that would mean Rebecca still cared. Now, he couldn’t read her at all. Did she still love him? Had she ever loved him?
“You can go first,” Bruce said, his tone flat as ice.
Rebecca nodded, then projected her proposal onto the big screen. Since this was just an initial visit to get a feel for the client’s needs, the proposal wasn’t too detailed. Even so, Austin nodded in approval when she finished. “Very impressive, Ms. Harper. You really know your stuff.”
He turned to Sonja. “Alright, Dr. Campbell, your turn.”
The four of them went into the private dining room one after another. Since Austin hadn’t arrived yet, no one touched the food. Cindy ignored Bruce and Sonja, scrolling through her phone. Rebecca excused herself, saying she needed to use the restroom and get some air.
But as she reached the hallway, someone suddenly pulled her into a corner. Rebecca gasped in shock, and Bruce quickly clamped a hand over her mouth.
“It’s me.”
“Let go of me!” As soon as Rebecca recognized Bruce, she stopped struggling and shoved his hand away, clearly annoyed.
The look on her face made Bruce’s eyes grow even colder. He grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. “What, you can’t even stand me touching you now? Or are you just worried Stephen will get the wrong idea?”
