The terrifying scene she’d pictured of being thrown from the horse, bones snapping never actually happened.
Instead, she felt something warm and solid behind her. Rebecca whipped around, almost in disbelief.
“Mr. Duncan? What are you doing here?”
Stephen was right there, his hands tight on the reins, his legs gripping the horse as he held Rebecca close, shielding her. The horse finally settled, its wild pace slowing down. Only then did Stephen relax, looking down at the woman in his arms.
“Are you alright?”
“I’m… I’m fine.” She tried to sound calm, but as soon as Stephen got off the horse and reached up to help her down, Rebecca’s world spun. She fainted right into his arms.
“Rebecca?” Stephen’s voice was sharp with worry.
He swept her up and carried her quickly toward the edge of the field. Austin rushed over, wiping sweat from his forehead, with a group of doctors scrambling behind him.
“Doctor, please check on Ms. Harper. Hurry.”
A short distance away, Bruce stood frozen, watching it all happen, his face stunned.
Rebecca got hurt?
“Bruce,” Sonja grabbed his arm, stopping him from running over. “I feel so dizzy.”
Bruce’s worry switched instantly. “Come on, I’ll take you to see a doctor.”
Half an hour later, Rebecca slowly opened her eyes. The first thing she saw was a handsome, gentle face leaning over her.
Stephen realized she was awake and immediately called for the doctor.
“Are you feeling any pain anywhere?” His voice was soft and careful.
Rebecca blinked, dazed. Was she dreaming? Since when was Stephen this gentle?
She shook her head. “No, I’m alright… just a little thirsty.”
Cindy rushed over with a glass of warm water, and Rebecca drank it down in big gulps, finishing two glasses in a row.
A few minutes later, the doctor came in from the next room. After checking her over, he said, “Nothing serious. Just get some rest, and walk around when you feel up to it. You’ll be fine.”
Austin stepped out to take a call, and Cindy came over to help Rebecca up. “Let’s take a walk. Some fresh air will help.”
Stephen followed a few steps behind, never too close, but always there.
In the next room, Sonja sat with a small scrape on her arm. The doctor dabbed medicine on the wound while Sonja bit her lip, silent.
Bruce held her hand, worry written all over his face. Once the doctor finished, Bruce couldn’t hold back any longer.
“How did the horse lose control like that, out of nowhere?”
Sonja’s eyes flickered. She lowered her head. “Ms. Harper doesn’t really know how to ride. It makes sense this would happen.”
Bruce paused. Did that mean Rebecca had caused the whole thing?
He pressed his lips together, a cold look settling in his eyes. Was it an accident, or was it on purpose? Rebecca had never really gotten over her grudge against Sonja.
Suddenly, the door swung open with a loud bang. Bruce looked up, frowning, toward the doorway.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
