Rebecca and Cindy had barely stepped out of the hospital room when voices from next door caught their attention.
It was Bruce and Sonja.
Cindy rolled her eyes and leaned in, whispering, “Right after you passed out, Bruce rushed in carrying Sonja, yelling for a doctor like she was dying. Turns out, she just scraped her arm. Honestly, I got worse bruises fighting with kids in preschool.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but let out a quiet laugh. Cindy really had a way with words.
“You’re not upset?” Cindy looked at her, genuinely surprised.
“Why would I be?”
“Bruce totally ignored you when you needed help and went running to Sonja instead. You two have been together for seven years. He’s just… the worst.”
Rebecca shrugged. “You just called him the worst. Why should I waste any tears on someone like that?”
Cindy stared at her for a second, then grinned. “Congrats. You’re officially over him.”
Not too far away, Stephen overheard and smiled to himself.
Just then, voices drifted from the other room.
Bruce said, “How did the horse suddenly lose control?”
Sonja replied, “Ms. Harper doesn’t know how to ride. It’s not surprising.”
Rebecca and Cindy locked eyes.
Was Sonja seriously blaming Rebecca for the whole thing?
Cindy had never been the type to let things slide. She started rolling up her sleeves, ready to barge in.
Rebecca moved even faster.
She kicked the door open.
Cindy was stunned into silence. So was Stephen.
Bruce saw Rebecca standing in the doorway. His face showed just how mixed up he felt inside.
Back at the stables, he’d left her behind. Now, seeing her again, guilt twisted in his chest. Still, did she really have to kick in the door?
He never even tried to hear her side.
Rebecca glared at Bruce. “I’m not going to let anyone pin this on me. If you won’t tell the truth, I will.”
She turned her eyes on Sonja and spoke clearly, not missing a syllable. “Your horse lost control first. You couldn’t handle it, and then mine got spooked too. That’s why I got hurt.”
“You’re the one at fault here.”
Cindy’s jaw dropped. “Wait, Sonja, didn’t you say you won first place in some fancy royal equestrian competition?”
She, Austin, and Bruce had been too far from the paddock to see what happened. They only realized something was wrong when they heard the stablehands yelling.
But thinking back, something was off. When they picked horses, Sonja had acted so confident. She’d picked the wildest horse there, told the stable staff she didn’t need any help, and bragged about her equestrian championship from her study abroad days.
And this was what she could do?
Really?
Cindy narrowed her eyes, tapping her chin. “Don’t tell me… that certificate of yours is fake, isn’t it?”
