It was hard to say. After all, she’d been caught before.
Sonja’s face went pale. “Of course not. I worked really hard to get that certificate.”
Cindy didn’t bother arguing. A lie was still a lie, no matter how many times you tried to dress it up.
Right now, clearing Rebecca’s name mattered most.
“So, was it your horse that lost control first?” Cindy’s tone was sharp. “Think before you answer. There are cameras all around the riding arena.”
Sonja’s nerves spiked.
Cameras?
She took a second, then replied in a careful voice, “Maybe my horse did panic first. It was chaos out there. By the time I realized, both horses were running wild. I honestly don’t remember the details.”
She pressed her hand hard against her wound, her face twisting in pain.
“Ow... it really hurts...”
That’s when Austin came back, just off a call.
He hurried over, apologizing over and over. “I’m really sorry, both of you. Today’s mess isn’t Sonja’s fault, it’s mine. To make it up to you, I’ve decided the Northbridge Partners project will go to both NovaStack Cloud and Sunforge Tech. Each of you will handle part of it.”
Sonja hadn’t seen that coming. “Thank you, Austin.”
If Rebecca kept pushing now, she’d just be making things harder for Austin.
It was obvious he wanted to drop it.
If things got out of hand, his stables would get a bad name.
Rebecca thought for a moment. “Thank you, Austin. Let’s just leave it here. And don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone what happened today.”
Austin finally relaxed, like a weight had been lifted from his chest.
On the drive away from the stables, Cindy glanced at Rebecca. “Do you actually think Sonja ever really won first place at that royal equestrian tournament?”
Rebecca shrugged. “No idea.”
Cindy smirked. “I’d love to see Bruce’s face if he found out his precious girl was a total fake.”
Rebecca had seen just how much Bruce favored Sonja. Even if he learned she’d cheated on her thesis, Sonja would still be perfect in his eyes.
