“Congratulations on winning the arbitration,” Stephen said, his voice warm.
Rebecca smiled, a little surprised. “Thank you.”
She really hadn’t expected Stephen to care so much about these things. He truly was something special.
“Your exam must be coming up soon, right?” Stephen asked.
Rebecca nodded. “Yeah, less than ten days now.”
“For the next ten days, just focus on studying,” he said.
Rebecca blinked at him, stunned.
Was she hearing this right?
She knew Mr. Duncan was a great boss, but this was beyond anything she’d ever imagined.
Stephen grinned. “You heard me. Go home, study, and don’t worry about work. I’ll handle everything here.”
Rebecca hesitated. “I… I don’t know if I can do that. The company’s paying me. I should be working.”
Stephen looked amused, settling back on the sofa. “If it makes you feel better, I can have HR mark these days as personal leave, no pay. Does that help?”
Rebecca almost laughed. Other companies worried their employees would slack off to study. Somehow, her boss was practically forcing her to take time off.
She spoke up, genuinely curious. “Why are you being so supportive? Most bosses aren’t like this.”
Stephen thought fast. “Honestly, I just don’t want to disappoint my uncle. You know he’s been hoping you’ll become his graduate student.”
Rebecca’s eyes lit up at the mention of Dr. Palmer. “I’d love to study under him, too.”
“Then do it,” Stephen said, leaning in a little. “Take these last ten days and put everything into your prep.”
Stephen’s ears turned a little red. He cleared his throat. “Let’s start.”
Half an hour later, Stephen nodded, clearly impressed. “This is really good. Your new product is even better than I expected. I think we should test it out using Duncan Corporation’s actual operations. If that goes well, we can launch it for real.”
Rebecca’s face lit up. “That would be amazing.”
Usually, new products ended up stuck in endless testing because there wasn’t a real environment to try them out. The fact that Stephen was willing to use the company’s business to support her idea completely caught her off guard.
She couldn’t help thinking, once again, that she had the best boss.
Stephen smiled at her. “You’ve been generous enough to let the company use your patent for free. Of course I should do something in return.”
He paused, curiosity flickering in his eyes. “About your ‘Automated Interest Rate Curve Model’ patent. There must be tons of companies interested in it. If you put it up for sale, you could probably make a fortune. Why haven’t you?”
Rebecca gave a small, honest laugh. “It’s not that I don’t care about money, Mr. Duncan. I do, just like everyone else. But money alone isn’t enough. I love my work. I love creating new products, solving real problems for clients, and seeing the financial industry here grow because of something I built. That means more to me than just a big payout.”
