Spending another minute talking to someone like that was a waste of time. Rebecca walked right past Sonja and headed upstairs without looking back.
Sonja shot Rebecca a furious glare, her hands curling into fists at her sides. Did Rebecca know her secret? No way. The only people who knew what really happened overseas were Shawn, Brett and Brett’s mother. Shawn was under her control, and the Bretts would never set foot in this country again. Her secrets were safe. They always would be.
Just then, Sonja’s phone rang. Shawn’s name lit up the screen. Sonja let a sly smile slip. “You’ve landed? Send me your hotel address.”
Meanwhile, Rebecca knocked on the door of the private dining room. Cindy jumped up to give her a huge hug.
“Congrats, bestie! You finally finished your exams! The world of science just got a whole lot luckier with you in it!”
Rebecca couldn’t help but laugh. Cindy was being dramatic, as usual. Besides, the exam results weren’t even out yet. There was still another round of testing after the holidays.
Cindy winked. “You’re totally going to pass. If you don’t, then the people who wrote the test must be out of their minds.”
That kind of unconditional support made Rebecca’s heart feel warm. Being believed in was such a great feeling.
Rebecca turned to Stephen, who was dressed in all black today—a soft cashmere sweater and tailored trousers. He looked effortlessly elegant.
“Wishing you luck in advance,” Stephen said, handing her a bouquet of lilies. The sweet scent filled the room. Lilies meant good luck in everything.
Her boss really knew how to make a moment special. Rebecca’s fingers brushed the purple handkerchief in her pocket, and she grinned to herself. Were all men this into little rituals these days?
They all sat down as the waiter brought over menus. Cindy slid one straight to Rebecca. “You get first pick.”
“Thanks.” Rebecca didn’t protest, choosing two of her favorite dishes. The Duncan siblings picked theirs too.
Once they’d ordered, Cindy piped up, “We need to celebrate! Bring out your best red wine!”
“You little troublemaker.” Stephen flicked his sister’s forehead with a smile.
Rebecca hesitated. “Maybe I shouldn’t. I have to drive home tonight.”
