Paul just grinned.
“You rich people, huh?”
She was clearly drawing a line, putting them on opposite sides. Paul didn’t argue. He just said, “The view here is better than any hotel. And the vibe is way more fun.”
Rebecca fell quiet. She didn’t really know Paul that well, but somehow, he always found a way to start a conversation. Honestly, she found it a bit much. Still, he was Judy’s cousin and had helped her out a few times, so she didn’t feel right snapping at him.
A few minutes later, Rebecca glanced at her phone and faked surprise. “Wow, it’s almost one in the morning. I should head home.”
Paul saw right through her act and let out a small laugh.
“Let me drive you home,” he offered.
Rebecca shook her head so fast she looked like a bobblehead. “No, honestly, my place is super close. I’m good.”
“I’ll walk with you, then.”
“You really don’t have to.”
Paul rubbed his forehead. “It’s late. If something happened to you, I’d feel terrible forever.”
Rebecca sighed. “Fine.”
He’d made it impossible for her to say no without seeming rude.
As they walked, Paul asked, “Have you talked to Judy lately?”
Rebecca shook her head. “No, I’ve been swamped at work.”
That whole situation with the leak at Sunforge Tech had blown up pretty badly, even getting the police involved. Everyone in the industry was talking about it, and Paul had heard too. Thanks to all that, Rebecca had ended up a little famous in their circle.
Paul went on, “Judy’s been kind of down. If you have time, could you maybe check in on her?”
Rebecca slowed a step. “What happened?”
Paul noticed and unwound his black scarf from around his neck.
“You really don’t—”
Before she could say another word, he had already looped it around her neck, twice.
“It’s late. You should head up,” Paul said quietly as they reached her building.
Rebecca glanced down at the scarf. “I’ll give it back through Judy.”
Paul nodded, getting what she didn’t say explicitly. She was agreeing to talk to Judy.
“Alright.”
He watched her head inside, waited until he saw her apartment light turn on, then finally walked away. It was too late to walk home, so he called a car. On the ride, he messaged his assistant to pick up his car from the club the next day.
He was about to turn off his phone when a photo popped up in their group chat. He tapped to enlarge it. It was a picture of him and Rebecca, taken from behind as he walked her home.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
