After dark, Sonja and the group went down to the hotel for dinner. When they finished dinner, they spent some time playing cards, laughter drifting through the cozy lounge. It was well past midnight before everyone finally got up to head back to their rooms.
Just as they were about to leave, Lottie came walking over. “Heading to bed already?” she asked, her voice bright but a little breathless. “I figured you might be thirsty, so I brought some juice.” She handed out glasses with a careful smile.
Sonja looked her up and down, obviously pleased with how attentive Lottie was being tonight. “Perfect timing. Juice before bed sounds nice. Thanks, Lottie.”
“No problem.” Lottie replied, her smile a little shaky as she passed the drinks. She handed glasses to Bruce and Morris, but when she reached Paul, her hand trembled, and a splash of juice landed on his fingers.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. Let me get that.” Flustered, she glanced around for a napkin or towel, but nothing was nearby. Without another word, Lottie hurried out to find something to clean up the mess.
Sonja shook her head, amused. “She is always so clumsy.”
Morris noticed Paul still holding his untouched glass. “If you’re not gonna drink that, pass it over. I’m dying of thirst.”
“Take it,” Paul said, handing it to him. Sweet drinks were never his thing before bed.
A minute later, Lottie rushed back in with a handful of napkins for Paul. He took them, murmuring a soft thank you. The sound of his voice, even just that, made Lottie’s heart flutter. She glanced at the empty glasses on the table, her mind spinning.
Tonight… Just thinking about what might happen made her cheeks burn and her ears feel hot.
Sonja caught her staring into space. “What’s going on in that head of yours? You’re blushing.”
Lottie quickly shook her head. “It’s nothing. Really.”
Nobody pressed for details. One by one, they headed upstairs, Lottie trailing a little behind. All their rooms were on the same floor, and as luck would have it, Lottie’s was right next to Paul’s.
She checked the time again. Almost there. Her lips curled into a soft smile as she quietly walked next door and knocked.
She thought she’d need some excuse, but before she could say anything, the door opened and a strong arm pulled her inside.
The room was pitch black. Lottie’s heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it. “I…”
She barely got a word out before he swept her up and dropped her onto the soft bed. A warm, solid body pressed close. Lottie felt a rush of dizzy happiness.
She whispered, “Please… be gentle. I’m scared it’ll hurt.”
After that, she lost track of time. The rest of the night melted away, and finally, both of them drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep.
