“Yes, thank you.” Rebecca’s voice was polite, but distant.
Paul hesitated, then blurted out, “Have you… have you been avoiding me lately?”
That caught Rebecca off guard. She hadn’t expected him to just say it like that.
She hesitated. “I’ve just been really busy.”
The silence from the other end stretched on, long enough for Rebecca to think he’d finally taken the hint and was ready to let things go. She felt a wave of relief and was about to end the call.
Then Paul laughed quietly. “If you think that’s going to make me give up, you’re wrong. Rebecca, I’m not going anywhere.”
Rebecca ran her fingers through her hair, frustrated. “Do you really think this is okay? You’ve known them since you were kids. Are you really willing to throw away more than twenty years of friendship for this?”
Paul’s answer was steady. “I’ll handle it.”
His stubbornness was exhausting. “Whatever. Do what you want, but I don’t have feelings for you. I really think you’re wasting your time.”
Paul sounded unbothered. “Feelings can grow, you know.”
Rebecca just hung up, at a loss for words, and handed the phone back to Judy.
Judy watched her for a moment, picking up on her bad mood, then quickly sent her brother a message. “Did you piss Rebecca off? Weren’t you supposed to take it slow and let things happen naturally?”
Paul texted back, “The game’s up. I need a new strategy. Be good and keep me posted if anything happens.”
Judy felt like she was suddenly some kind of double agent, but for her brother’s sake, she decided to play along.
After the new product launch, Sunforge Tech was swamped with orders. Clients kept coming in, asking about the latest release.
Looking around at the busy office, Rebecca made a quick decision. They needed to hire more people.
It wasn’t just the backend implementation team that needed help. The development team, front-end sales, pre-sales, and even admin and HR needed to grow. Before, headquarters staff had juggled those jobs. Now, with the surge in clients and employees, it was time to build a proper team.
Rebecca smiled and nodded.
Mitch could be a little crafty, but at the end of the day, he was decent. He just wanted more people and a bigger bonus. That was easy enough to manage.
Some people are simple. As long as you see their hard work and appreciate it, they’ll do their best every day.
The hiring push was in full swing.
One afternoon, Justin knocked on Rebecca’s door, looking a little flustered. “Ms. Harper, there’s something you need to decide.”
“What’s up?”
He stepped inside and lowered his voice. “A group of people from NovaStack Cloud came in to interview. They said they used to work for you.”
Rebecca froze. Had the entire team at NovaStack Cloud just quit?
