The night was pitch black and Bruce’s suit was even darker, making him blend into the shadows. His handsome face was hard and unreadable, every line set in cold anger.
Lots of NovaStack Cloud employees had come over to interview at Sunforge Tech. Rebecca didn’t stop them. She just told HR and the tech leads to stick to the rules. If someone met the requirements, they got the salary they deserved. If not, they were turned away, no exceptions.
“We have nothing to hide,” she told her team. “We hire openly and fairly. Let people say what they want.”
In just two weeks, Sunforge Tech had picked up plenty of NovaStack Cloud’s people. They learned fast, adapted even faster, and pushed everyone’s work to a new level.
Rebecca knew Bruce well enough to expect that he’d show up, looking for a fight. She wasn’t worried, not even a little.
She gave him a slow smile. “It’s been a while, but I see you still like to pop up at night and block people’s way.”
Bruce picked up on her sarcasm right away. His chest moved with a sharp breath as he tried to keep himself calm. “Don’t you think you’re going too far? Stealing my clients was bad enough. Now you’re poaching my employees?”
Rebecca rolled her eyes. “Careful how you say that, Mr. Lamont. Our clients came to us. Your employees sent their own résumés. No one forced anyone. Everyone made their own choice.”
She paused, looking him up and down. “If NovaStack Cloud is so great, why don’t you try to win them back? I really wouldn’t mind.”
Bruce’s jaw clenched so tight you could almost hear his teeth grinding. He spoke slowly, each word heavy. “I never realized how sharp your tongue could be. All that gentle, good-girl act from before was all fake, wasn’t it?”
Hearing him bring up the past, Rebecca closed her eyes for a second.
She used to be so stupid. Just thinking about it made her want to slap herself.
She let out a bitter little laugh. “You’re right. I was pretending.”
She had never been the stay-at-home, loving wife type. She’d only tried to change for Bruce, and look how that turned out. She hated the version of herself she used to be.
Bruce, of course, misunderstood everything. He thought her anger meant she still cared.
He stepped closer, grabbing her shoulders. His eyes were rimmed red. “Rebecca, I knew you hadn’t gotten over me. Let’s forget the past, okay? Let’s start again.”
He leaned in, aiming for her lips.
A sharp smack echoed in the night.
“Who did this to you?” Kelley asked, concern in her voice. She waved at a servant. “Bring an ice pack.”
Bruce shrugged off his jacket. He didn’t want his mother to worry, so he just brushed it off. “It’s nothing.”
Kelley didn’t buy it for a second. Her brows tightened. “It wasn’t Sonja, was it? She hasn’t married you yet and she already dares to hit you?”
“It wasn’t her,” Bruce said, sounding tired as he dropped onto the sofa and took a sip of water.
But Kelley wasn’t that easy to fool. She took the ice pack and pressed it to his cheek, watching his face carefully. Suddenly, her expression turned cold.
“You went to see Rebecca again, didn’t you?”
Bruce froze, his hand halfway to his mouth. Kelley saw right through him.
A mocking smile curled at her lips. “What, is she throwing a fit because she can’t have you? She’s just not worth our time.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
