The next morning, Rebecca went downstairs to pick up her mom’s medicine and, of all people, ran straight into Paul. They hadn’t seen each other in ages, but honestly, that was mostly because she had been doing her best to avoid him. Now, with him standing right in front of her, there was no way to duck out.
“Hey,” she said, forcing a smile. “It’s been a while.”
Paul raised his eyebrows, almost smirking. “Yeah, it has. Probably because someone’s been avoiding me.”
His teasing caught her off guard, and she didn’t know how to respond. She dropped her gaze, pretending nothing was wrong. “I’ve just been really busy. Sorry, I have to run.”
Paul watched her head toward the inpatient building. He frowned, stood there for a moment, then pulled out his phone. “Hey, Uncle. I need a favor. It’s a big one, kind of a matter of life and happiness for your nephew.”
Upstairs, Rebecca poured a glass of warm water and helped her mom take her pills. Samantha smiled as she finished. “The weather’s nice today. Maybe we should go for a walk later.”
“Sure,” Rebecca said.
Just then, the hospital room door opened. A group of doctors and nurses walked in. Leading them was Samantha’s main doctor, who was reporting something to the doctor in the middle of the group, looking incredibly respectful. The doctor in the center listened closely, nodding and occasionally making a comment. It was obvious he was important.
Rebecca felt like she’d seen him before.
“Dr. Surles?” Samantha said from her bed, immediately recognizing him as the senior doctor from her previous appointments.
Rebecca suddenly remembered as well. She’d just bumped into Paul downstairs, and now Dr. Surles had shown up. She didn’t need to guess how that happened. She sighed silently. She really didn’t want to owe Paul any more favors, but here she was, stuck with another debt.
A nurse handed Dr. Surles a stack of test results. He flipped through them and paused for a moment. “Your reports look good. The recovery since your last surgery has been going really well.”
Everyone in the room laughed, and Rebecca felt a rush of gratitude. “Thank you, Dr. Surles. Really.”
“It’s nothing,” he said, waving it off, and soon he and the rest of the staff filed out.
Samantha turned to Rebecca, looking curious. “So, who’s the Paul that Dr. Surles mentioned?”
“He’s…” Rebecca froze, unsure how to explain.
At that moment, the door swung open again. Paul walked in, a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a gift basket in the other. He glanced at Rebecca first, then smiled at Samantha. “Hi, ma’am. I’m Rebecca’s friend. I heard you were in the hospital and wanted to come by and check on you.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
