He set the flowers and the gift basket on the table like he’d done it a hundred times before. Paul had on a light-colored suit today, looking relaxed but sharp, with a soft smile that made him seem both warm and thoughtful.
Samantha caught the way her daughter’s brow furrowed and instantly sensed there was more going on between these two than met the eye. She cleared her throat and asked, a little unsure, “And you are...?”
“I’m Paul.”
Samantha’s eyes widened. “Wait, you’re Paul? Is Dr. Surles...?”
A smile flickered on Paul’s lips. “He’s my uncle. I actually ran into Rebecca downstairs and figured you might not be feeling well, so I asked my uncle to come by and check on you.”
“Oh, thank you. Really, I’m sorry for all the trouble, both for you and Dr. Surles.”
“It’s nothing. Really, don’t mention it.”
Then Paul glanced at Rebecca again. His gaze lingered, warm and intense, and the way he said her name over and over left no doubt in Samantha’s mind. It was obvious now. The guy had a thing for her daughter.
He wasn’t bad looking, either. And if he was Dr. Surles’ nephew, his family background was probably solid. Definitely an upgrade from the guy yesterday. That one had seemed way too important, too intimidating, like someone from a different world. But Paul felt comfortable. He probably came from a good, middle-class family. He and Rebecca were on the same level. This could work.
Samantha snapped back to the moment and nudged her daughter’s arm. “Get Paul some fruit. Don’t just leave him standing there.”
Rebecca let out a small sigh but stood up anyway. “Please, have a seat,” she said politely. She picked up an apple and started peeling it.
Paul didn’t hesitate. He made himself comfortable on the sofa, watching her peel the apple while chatting with Samantha.
Samantha asked about his family. Paul gave a slight smile. “Just a small family business.”
Rebecca’s eyebrows shot up. A small business? Their company made billions every year. That was hardly small.
Samantha asked if he had any brothers or sisters. Paul shook his head. “It’s just me. Only child.”
