The nurse came over with a tray of bandages and supplies, carefully disinfected Rebecca’s finger, then snipped a piece of gauze and wrapped it around her hand. Paul watched, his eyebrows pulled together with worry. “That’s it? Are you sure it won’t get infected?”
The nurse gave him a look, half amused, half exasperated. “It’s fine. Adults aren’t as fragile as you think.”
She glanced back and forth between Paul and Rebecca, her eyes lighting up a little. Another handsome guy, she thought. Some people just have all the luck.
They sat there a while longer. Paul’s phone wouldn’t stop buzzing. He just silenced it and flipped it over so the screen faced the table.
Rebecca finally couldn’t take it anymore. “You seem busy,” she said. “If you have things to do, you don’t have to stay.”
“Rebecca!” Samantha shot her daughter a warning glare, then turned to Paul with an apologetic smile. “Please don’t mind her. She’s just very straightforward.”
Paul shook his head, a faint smile on his lips. “It’s alright, ma’am. I don’t mind at all.” He stood up. “I should get going, then.”
Samantha gave Rebecca a desperate look. “Rebecca, see Paul out for me, will you?”
Rebecca let out a tiny sigh and walked with him toward the exit.
Downstairs, Rebecca took a slow, steady breath. “Thank you for getting Dr. Surles to see my mom today. But… in the future…” She looked down at her shoes. “I’d appreciate it if you didn’t do things like this anymore. It’d probably be better if we didn’t see each other so much.”
Paul’s face fell. He knew exactly what she meant. His voice was low and rough. “Do you have a new boyfriend?”
Rebecca blinked, caught off guard. “No.”
“I’m not giving up,” he called out, using every bit of strength he had left. “As long as you’re single, I still have a chance!”
Rebecca’s steps slowed for a moment, but she kept walking, disappearing inside the hospital building.
Paul stood there for a long time before lighting a cigarette, taking a drag, and finally heading to his car.
Not far away, Lottie had seen everything. She’d come for a prenatal checkup, and now that her baby was stable, she was ready to put her plan into action. When the doctor handed her the ultrasound images, she let out a long sigh of relief. The baby was healthy. She’d pulled some strings and found out it was a boy, which made her feel completely secure. This baby was her ticket into the Terry family.
She left the clinic just in time to see Rebecca and Paul talking outside. Curiosity got the best of her. She moved a little closer, hiding behind a pillar to listen in.
She couldn’t believe what she heard. Paul was actually confessing to Rebecca, and Rebecca turned him down flat. Lottie covered her mouth, trying not to gasp. She’d always suspected Paul was into Rebecca, after that trip to the hot springs over the holidays. She just never thought he’d really come out and say it, not with Bruce still in the picture.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
Can't wait for the next update! 😍...
Honestly, Rebecca's mother needs to be called out for pettiness. At the same time, Rebecca needs to explain her work situation to her mother....
