Avery instantly caught on to what her daughter was up to. Her frown faded away, and she crossed her legs, looking a bit more relaxed. “Alright then, make sure you really get her back this time.” She paused, then changed the subject. “So, how are things between you and Bruce lately?”
They were supposed to have dinner with Bruce’s family, but he canceled at the last minute. Avery was still annoyed about it. She had even reached out to Kelley in private, but Kelley just kept dodging her questions, going on and on about how young people shouldn’t rush into marriage, that their careers were more important.
The mention of Bruce made Sonja visibly tense. Lately, Bruce had been so distant. Every time she tried to invite him to dinner, he brushed her off, always saying he was busy. After a while, Sonja got tired of chasing after him.
Avery sighed, shaking her head. “You can’t let little things get to you. If you give up so easily just because he rejected you a few times, how am I supposed to trust you to run the family business one day?”
She leaned in, her expression serious but a little playful. “You know, relationships are like a spring. If you’re weak, he’ll be strong. If you’re strong, he’ll be weak.”
Sonja couldn’t help but complain. “But after everything that’s happened, how am I supposed to act strong around him?”
Avery just smiled, a knowing glint in her eyes. “You’re a woman. You need to use what you’ve got. No matter how tough he acts, he’s still a young man with needs.”
Sonja rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, sinking back into the sofa. “I’ve tried, trust me. He just doesn’t seem interested.” She was starting to wonder if Bruce had a problem. She was supposed to be the one he couldn’t resist, but even when she made the first move, he didn’t bite. It made no sense.
“If it doesn’t work the first time, try again. And again. Eventually, you’ll get your shot.”
Sonja let out a long sigh. “Fine, I’ll give it another shot.” But before that, she needed to get some of her pride back from Rebecca.
The next day, while Rebecca was busy with her mother’s discharge paperwork, Sonja slipped quietly into the VIP hospital room, arms full of shopping bags. Samantha glanced up and assumed Sonja was one of Rebecca’s friends from work. She greeted her with a bright smile. “Come in, have a seat. You brought so many gifts, you really didn’t have to do all this.”
It hit Samantha like a bolt of lightning. She clutched her chest and collapsed back onto the sofa, her face going pale. Pointing at Sonja with a shaking hand, she whispered, “You… you came here just to upset me.”
Sonja’s voice was syrupy sweet. “Oh, please, don’t say that. I’m just here to visit. How could you think I’d come to upset you?”
“You have no idea how good Alan’s been to me and my mom since he joined our family. If I wanted the moon, he’d find a way to get it for me.”
“I only just found out you’re his ex-wife, and that Rebecca is his daughter. What a small world. I used to work with Rebecca, too.”
She leaned in closer, lowering her voice so only Samantha could hear. “And by the way, Bruce broke off his engagement with Rebecca because of me. Soon, Bruce and I will be getting married. We’ll be the happiest couple you’ve ever seen.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
