He never planned to propose this soon. But after messing up twice with Sonja, the guilt was eating him alive.
He’d been with Rebecca for seven years. Sure, things never got truly serious between them, but there was always heat, always that spark. With Sonja, though, it was different. The first time, he’d felt that rush of desire, but the second time, nothing. Complete blank. People always say that when a man loves a woman deeply, he stops wanting her physically. That had to be it, right? It had to mean he loved Sonja for real, with his whole heart. That was the only explanation he could accept.
So, to make up for everything, Bruce decided to propose.
The families talked and settled the details. The engagement would happen in two months. The wedding, they agreed, would wait until the end of the year.
Sonja thought waiting that long was ridiculous. She wanted to move things up, but Avery stopped her with just a look.
Later, her mom scolded her gently. “You’re rushing things. After the engagement, ask Bruce nicely. He’ll do whatever you want. If you want to get married sooner, it’ll be just a matter of saying so.”
In the car, Sonja sat with her arms crossed, making annoyed little noises under her breath.
“What’s wrong?” Avery noticed immediately.
Sonja’s patience was wearing thin. “I just want to get this marriage over with, take control of the company, and stop pretending with him.”
Avery frowned. “What happened? You never liked Bruce that much, but it’s not like you hated him. Why are you so upset now?”
“Mom, he’s… not capable.”
Avery blinked, confused. “Not capable of what?”
Suddenly, it clicked. Avery’s eyes went wide in shock. How could this be?
