Sonja finally felt at ease. Still, just to be sure, she reached out to Shawn to double-check. “You said NovaStack Cloud is a great investment, with huge potential. You really mean it? Like, it could be as big as those tech giants overseas?”
Shawn just said, “If you don’t believe me, there’s not much I can do.”
Sonja clenched her jaw. Shawn was always so sarcastic talking to her.
A second later, his lazy voice floated through the phone. “I just sent you a report from a top international investment firm. One of my friends told me they’re about to invest in NovaStack Cloud themselves.”
He hung up before she could say another word.
Sonja opened the report on her phone. She couldn’t make sense of all the technical terms, but she saw NovaStack Cloud’s name everywhere, and right at the end, the recommendation was clear. “Increase investment by ten billion.” That was all she needed. Besides, she still had Shawn’s sister as leverage. He wouldn’t dare lie to her.
Right then, her old party friend called. “Hey, girl, Paradise just got some new guys in. Trust me, this batch is next level. You really not coming?”
Usually, Sonja always said no. But today, she hesitated. She thought about her future after marriage, how stifling it would be. Her whole body tensed up just imagining it. Maybe she should go out and have some fun while she still could. After all, once she became Mrs. Lamont, she’d have to watch every step, every word.
The day of the “Distinguished Technology Professional” award ceremony was sunny and bright. Rebecca got up early and did her makeup, keeping it simple but elegant.
Samantha came out of the kitchen, smiling as she set breakfast on the table. “You are so pretty. Prettier than any movie star.”
Samantha had recovered completely and was home from the hospital. With Rebecca’s help, she’d learned how to use the video doorbell and security cameras. If anything seemed wrong at the door, she’d call the police right away. Thankfully, Alan hadn’t shown up since that day at the hospital.
Rebecca set down her makeup mirror and hugged her mom around the neck. “That’s just your good genes at work.”
Rebecca could feel a headache coming on. Her mom’s matchmaking had become relentless, like something out of a sitcom. Maybe it was just one of those things that happened as people got older.
She grabbed her bag and started putting on her shoes. “I’m going to be late, Mom. Really, you don’t need to worry about me. I already have someone I like.”
Before Samantha could ask who, Rebecca had already closed the door and left.
Samantha mumbled to herself. Was it that man called Stephen?
The truth was, Rebecca had just made it up to get her mom to stop arranging blind dates. She had no idea her mom would start imagining things on her own.
At nine, Rebecca pulled up to the award ceremony. She looked around the entrance, but there was no sign of Stephen or Liam. She lowered her eyes, trying to hide her disappointment.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
