Rebecca remembered what Liam had said to her last time. He should be coming too, right?
As soon as she stepped into the venue, she saw that the place was already filling up. The moment she walked in, several heads turned in surprise. Most of the guests were older. Among all these serious, distinguished men, Rebecca stood out as the only young lady in the room.
Some people recognized her right away and came over, reaching out to shake her hand.
“Hi, you’re Rebecca, aren’t you? I watched your product launch the other day. Really impressive.”
“Ms. Harper, you look even prettier in person than you do online.”
Rebecca shook hands with them one by one, chatting about work and sharing some technical thoughts. She smiled and kept her cool, but couldn’t help glancing toward the entrance every now and then, her mind wandering.
The host soon took the stage, and after a few words to welcome everyone, the ceremony officially began. Rebecca found her seat and sat down, fidgeting with her phone, thinking about messaging Stephen. She wanted to ask, Where are you? Why haven’t I seen you here today? But then she figured, he’s got a million things to do, and why would he bother coming to something as small as this awards ceremony? In the end, she put her phone away.
Just then, a group of people entered the hall. They were all familiar faces, a few she’d seen on TV before. Right in the middle of them was Stephen.
He looked every bit the part, with sharp features and striking eyes. His posture was straight-backed and confident, a custom black suit fitting him perfectly. Even his hair was styled with care.
Rebecca suddenly felt her heart skip a beat. She wasn’t the only one. The handful of ladies in the audience all had their eyes glued to him.
The group walked to the front row and stopped. The district head smiled at Stephen.
“Mr. Duncan, please have a seat.”
Stephen nodded politely. “Thank you.” He turned to glance around the room. His eyes landed on Rebecca and rested there for a moment before he finally sat down.
Rebecca felt a tightness in her chest. Was he just glancing at her?
The district head went up on stage and gave a short speech, wishing everyone success and offering congratulations. Then the awards part started.
“First, we’ll present the team awards. The Best Technological Achievement goes to…”
As the host read out the names, three teams went on stage. Each team got a trophy from the district head.
