A flicker of awkwardness passed over Madison’s face, but she smoothed it over in a heartbeat. “Oh, it’s nothing. Morris just insists on having my homemade soup, so I’m rushing home to make it for him.”
Kelley grinned and pulled an invitation from her bag. “We finally set the date for Bruce and Sonja’s engagement. Since I bumped into you, I’ll take this opportunity and give you the invitation now. You and Christian have to come.”
Madison’s smile tightened. Bruce and Morris had grown up together. While Bruce was about to marry the perfect match from the Campbell family, her son partied, wasted time, showed no ambition, and now he’d managed to get a girl pregnant. The comparison was enough to make her blood boil.
“Congrats. Christian and I will definitely be there. We’ll bring a huge gift for your kid.”
“Oh, you don’t need to go overboard. Just come, that’s all that matters. By the way, how’s Morris? Has he met anyone special?”
Madison forced another smile. “No, not yet. He’s still young. I don’t think he’s ready for all that. Maybe in a couple of years.”
Kelley nodded, quick to agree. “True, Morris is two years younger than Bruce. No need to rush.”
But Kelley understood exactly what was going on with Morris. Kelley only acted understanding when she thought someone else’s child didn’t measure up to her own.
As soon as Madison got in the car, her fake smile dropped. She tossed her purse onto the back seat and told the driver to go.
Half an hour later, the car rolled into her villa. The butler came out to help with her bag and gave a quick update. “Miss Bernan has been waiting inside for two hours. She says she won’t leave until she sees you. She also said… well, she also said…”
Madison turned, her voice sharp. “Said what?”
The butler wiped his brow, eyes cast down. “She said if you refuse to see her, she’ll call the reporters right away. She said you’ll have to get involved whether you want to or not, and Mr. Bernan’s reputation will be ruined. No one from Coralbridge’s upper circles would even consider marrying him.”
