After turning it over in her mind, only one family made sense. Maybe… Lottie was pregnant with Morris' child?
He was such a flirt, always surrounded by girls. He’s still so young and reckless, and would never want a kid. Unless… Morris had no idea. On the outside, Morris seemed like a carefree playboy, all charm and smiles. Deep down, though, he was cold and cruel. Rebecca remembered Bruce telling her how Morris once got tricked by a girl and her lover. Morris had used some shady methods to get revenge, and nearly ruined both of them. The girl ended up on the street, and the man landed in prison. If Morris ever found out someone was secretly pregnant with his child and tried to use it against him, the fallout would be ugly. Rebecca took a long breath. Should she warn Lottie? No way. She wasn't that kind. Even if she tried, would Lottie listen? Probably not. Lottie would just accuse her of being jealous, trying to mess things up.
The next morning, Rebecca dropped off her car at the shop and caught a taxi to work. As she walked up to her building, her phone buzzed. It was a courier. “Hi, I have an acceptance letter for you to sign.” The results from her final interview were out. Both she and Judy had been accepted. Staring at the envelope in her hand, Rebecca felt her heart leap. She got into the elevator, still grinning, and ran into Stephen and Cindy.
“Rebecca, what’s that?” Cindy spotted the letter right away.
Rebecca smiled. “It’s my acceptance letter.”
“No way, that’s awesome! We have to celebrate tonight. My treat,” Cindy said, throwing an arm around her.
Rebecca shook her head, a little embarrassed. “Let me treat you. You pick the place.”
A quiet voice spoke up from the corner. “Mind if I join too?”
Rebecca turned and met Stephen’s eyes. Her lashes fluttered. The last time she’d seen him, she’d been embarrassingly drunk, and he’d driven her home. The next morning, the memories of her drunken antics had her cringing. She’d been so mortified, she’d even avoided reporting her work to him.
She looked away, her voice barely above a whisper. “Of course not.”
