“Thank you, Mr. Duncan.”
Stephen just laughed. “Seriously? Did you forget our deal again? When we’re not at work, just call me by my name.”
He paused, his face turning serious. “And one more thing. I wish you’d stop acting so carefully around me all the time. You don’t have to be so formal with me.”
Rebecca’s heart skipped as she squeezed the little charm in her hand.
She definitely hadn’t forgotten.
Still, calling him by his title was her own way of keeping a safe distance. It reminded her that the two of them came from completely different worlds.
She only went inside when she was sure the Rolls-Royce was out of sight.
She had no idea someone was hiding nearby, snapping pictures of everything.
Back at the Duncan family’s old house, Chelsey lounged on the sofa, enjoying her late night snacks. Her phone suddenly buzzed, lighting up with message after message.
Every single one was a photo of her son with a girl.
The more Chelsey scrolled, the colder she felt.
The last photo was taken in the car. Even though the lighting was terrible, she could see just how bright her son’s smile was.
She really knew what she was doing.
Chelsey was so frustrated, she couldn’t eat another bite.
Cindy came downstairs just then, hair still damp from her shower. She took one look at her mom and could tell something was off.
“Mom, who got you in a bad mood?”
Chelsey almost asked if Cindy knew about her brother’s new friend, but then remembered how close the siblings were. If she pushed too hard, Cindy might tip him off. So Chelsey just smiled, pretending nothing was wrong. “Oh, I’m fine.”
She patted the seat next to her, and Cindy sat down, picking up a cookie.
Out of nowhere, Chelsey asked, “Cindy, what do you think of Jon?”
Cindy had just taken a bite and nearly choked, turning bright red. “Mom, why would you bring him up out of the blue?”
Chelsey shook her head, amused. “You were obsessed with Jon when you were little. Always following him around. But ever since you turned eighteen, you two barely talk. Why is that?”
