Cindy was too distracted to pick up on the meaning behind her mom’s words. She just grabbed a jacket and headed for the door.

“Stephen isn’t home?” Jon broke the silence first.

“He’s taking Rebecca home,” Cindy replied, sounding tired. “He should be back soon.”

Jon stopped walking for a second, surprised. “Stephen and Ms. Harper... are they together?”

“No, not at all. But honestly, I wish Rebecca would become my sister-in-law.”

Jon nodded. “Yeah, she seems great. I just heard she and Mr. Lamont from NovaStack Cloud had some drama in the past.”

“Oh, that’s ancient history. Rebecca’s over it now.”

“That’s good to hear.”

If they were talking about other people’s business, they could manage a few lines. Beyond that, the conversation died out again.

The quiet crept back in, heavier than before.

Cindy glanced at the villa gate, not far ahead. “You can go from here. I’m gonna go home now.”

Worried she’d sound too cold, she added, “Goodnight.”
