Cindy was totally out of breath. “While you guys were busy playing games, I snuck off to call my cousin and ask how the evidence search was going. But then, out of nowhere, he completely changed his tune. He told me he was just messing with me before, that Sonja’s credentials are all legit and she’s actually a great person.”

“That guy just completely flipped from everything he said before. I’m so mad I could scream!”

Rebecca was shocked, but it didn’t take her long to start thinking about why Brett would suddenly deny everything. After a moment, she said, “Do you think he did something Sonja knows about?”

Cindy narrowed her eyes. “You mean Sonja is blackmailing him or something, making sure he keeps quiet?”

But what could Sonja possibly have on her cousin? Their families hadn’t even talked in years, apart from the occasional phone call between Cindy and him. Cindy realized she actually didn’t know anything about his life in Canada.

Still, giving up just wasn’t her style. “It’s fine. If my cousin won’t help, I’ll handle it myself. I’ll hire a private investigator to go abroad and dig up the truth.”

Rebecca was really touched by how determined Cindy was to help her deal with Sonja. “Thank you, Cindy. Really. But I think it’s just way too much trouble for you. Let’s forget about it. I already talked to my mom, so Alan can’t just show up whenever he wants anymore.”

“What about you, though? Are you really okay with Sonja popping up in your life, acting all smug? Every time I see her clowning around, I just want to smack her.”

Rebecca couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m not that easy to push around. She’s not going to get the upper hand with me.”

But Cindy shook her head. “No way, you have to get rid of the problem at the root. I’m going to help you get this thorn out of your life for good.”

“Cindy, you’re honestly the best.” Rebecca couldn’t stop herself from hugging her.

For as long as she could remember, whether it was with Lottie or Bruce, Rebecca had always been the one giving. This was the first time someone, besides her mom, had done something so selfless for her. She felt her eyes fill with warmth.

Cindy suddenly grinned. “Will you consider becoming my sister-in-law? If you do, I’ll spoil you so much you’ll be the happiest girl in the world.”
