A lot of people turned down the invite, saying they’d rather just chill in their rooms and scroll through their phones. Cindy was definitely one of them. She sprawled out on her bed, limbs everywhere, and sighed, “Honestly, nothing beats lying in a hotel bed playing on your phone.”
Meanwhile, Rebecca was getting changed into her favorite fitted workout clothes. There was a mountain on the island she’d heard about before the trip, kind of famous, and she figured she’d finally check it out. There was even a monastry at the top, and people said praying there really worked for good health. She wanted to get a charm for her mom, just to be safe.
Once she was ready, she grabbed her hat and a bottle of water, then set out. The mountain wasn’t all that tall, so she packed light. Just as she guessed, nobody else was hiking today. But Rebecca didn’t mind. She just kept going, steady and focused, step by step.
Halfway up, she stopped to take a drink and looked up. The sky was suddenly full of dark clouds. Her stomach flipped. The weather app never mentioned rain. She didn’t have an umbrella, so all she could do was pick up the pace and hope to make it to the temple before the storm hit.
But the sky didn’t give her a chance. Rain came pouring down out of nowhere, sheets of water drenching the trees. The forest was thick, but it didn’t help much. Her canvas hat was useless, and pretty soon Rebecca was soaked through. Off in the distance, she thought she saw a hut, maybe a place to get out of the rain. She bit her lip and made a quick decision, veering off the main stone path and pushing through the bushes and rocks.
There were no steps here, just tangled branches and roots that wanted to trip her, and loose stones hidden under the mud. The rain was coming down so hard she could barely see where she was going. In her rush, her foot slipped on a wet rock, and she went sliding down the muddy slope, completely out of control.
Back at the hotel, Cindy only realized it was raining when she saw the group chat blowing up. She felt a wave of relief that she hadn’t gone out, or she’d be soaked right now. But then, as she glanced around her empty room, it hit her—Rebecca was still on the mountain.
Panicking, Cindy grabbed her phone and called Rebecca. The phone rang and rang, but no one picked up. She sent a message, then waited, but still got nothing. The rain was getting heavier and Cindy felt herself start to freak out. Hands shaking, she called Stephen, her voice already wobbly with tears. “Stephen, something’s wrong. Rebecca went hiking this afternoon and didn’t take an umbrella. I can’t get in touch with her.”
Stephen’s eyes went wide, and without another word, he rushed downstairs, grabbed an umbrella from the front desk, and ran out toward the mountain.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
