Rebecca stood there in a daze, then quickly crossed her arms over her chest, feeling a rush of embarrassment. The rain had left her soaking wet, and her fitted workout clothes were plastered to her skin, showing off way too much. Stephen definitely noticed. He swallowed hard, looked away, and took off his jacket, holding it out to her.
“Here. Put this on before you catch a cold.”
There was no point in pretending to be polite. Rebecca grabbed the jacket and slipped it on. “Thanks.”
It was way too big on her, but the warmth was immediate. His scent lingered in the fabric, woodsy and masculine, and it calmed her down, easing the panic that had been twisting in her chest. Her eyelashes fluttered as she looked over at Stephen.
“How did you even find me?” she asked.
If it hadn’t been for that accident, she’d never have ended up in this cave. But somehow, Stephen had tracked her down without missing a beat. It honestly amazed her.
Stephen just smiled and opened his hand. In his palm was her hair tie. Rebecca touched the back of her head, realizing her hair was loose and messy. Her cheeks burned with shame. She was always so put-together around him, always calm and in control. But today… not so much. The relief of being found faded a little.
“We’ll wait for the rain to slow down, then we can leave…” Before she could finish, she sneezed. Her voice came out all stuffy. “Sorry… ah-choo…”
Stephen didn’t hesitate. He reached over and pulled her into his arms. “Come here. You’ll warm up faster.”
Rebecca went stiff. Then she remembered what he’d said last night at the bonfire, that he already had someone he liked. She quickly pushed him away.
She couldn’t let herself get close to him, not when he was in love with someone else. She’d always hated the idea of being the other woman and she was not going to let herself become one now.
Stephen seemed confused. His brow furrowed as he thought about how distant she’d been lately. For once, he didn’t back off. He just held her tighter, ignoring her attempts to break free.
His voice was low, almost accusing. “Is this you not avoiding me?”
