The evidence was airtight. Mr. Keith didn’t waste a second. He and his partner jumped in the car and headed straight for the project base.
Meanwhile, at the base, everyone was gathered for afternoon tea, sharing slices of cake Martha had baked herself. With Rebecca gone these past two weeks, Martha had been in high spirits. She wasn’t tense or wary anymore, always watching Rebecca out of the corner of her eye. Instead, she poured all her energy into getting closer to Caleb.
She’d heard Caleb was into a cake from the cafeteria bakery lately, so she’d taught herself how to make it. Now she brought her homemade version to the base for everyone to try. Martha walked over to Caleb, holding out two little cakes and flashing him a sweet smile.
“Caleb, you’ve been working nonstop all morning. Take a break. I made these for you. Wanna try one?”
Caleb glanced at the cakes, looking completely uninterested. “Thanks, but I’m not hungry. You should give them to someone else.”
Since Rebecca left, Caleb had barely spoken. He hardly ever smiled, just went through the motions every day like a robot.
Martha bit her lip, trying not to show her disappointment. Without another word, she set the cakes back on the table. Her hands felt sticky from the frosting, so she headed toward the restroom to wash up.
She’d barely reached the door when she nearly collided with Mr. Keith.
He and his partner showed their badges. “Excuse me, which one of you is Martha?”
Martha’s heart jumped into her throat. Her back went stiff and she instinctively shrank into a corner. Why were the police here? Did they find something out? No, that couldn’t be. She’d been so careful. No one in the country had the skills to trace anything back to her. Rebecca couldn’t have found out so quickly.
Mr. Keith noticed her silence. He stepped further into the room and asked again, “Who here is Martha?”
All the students froze. None of them had ever dealt with the police before.
Caleb was the first to snap out of it. He pointed to Martha, who was standing by the door. “That’s her. Officers, can I ask what’s going on?”
Mr. Keith pulled out a pair of handcuffs, his voice firm and commanding. “Martha, we’ve received a report. You’re accused of working with an overseas hacking group to steal your classmate’s research. Please come with us.”
The room erupted in shocked whispers.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
