To Martha, his words felt like a splash of water after nearly suffocating on dry land. She grabbed onto the chance, her voice trembling with hope. “I’ll tell you everything. Rebecca and I never had any real problems. I was just jealous because she was always hanging out with Caleb. I never meant to hurt her. It was Sonja. She made me do it.”

Mr. Keith’s eyes narrowed. “Who is Sonja? Why would she want to hurt Rebecca?”

“Sonja is the vice president at NovaStack Cloud. She’s also the CEO’s girlfriend. She wanted to go after Rebecca because Rebecca used to date her boyfriend. They’re basically rivals.”

For a moment, Mr. Keith just sat there, silent. He pieced together the tangled web of relationships and finally saw the whole picture. It was all because of jealousy and love.

Martha went on, explaining how she and Sonja had worked together with a group of hackers from overseas. They’d broken into the base’s network and stolen research from Rebecca and her classmates.

Mr. Keith stayed calm and professional. “The suspect says your daughter gave the orders. Please cooperate with our investigation. If she’s innocent, we will set her free.”

Sonja felt a wave of cold dread wash over her. Martha had actually been caught? How could that be? Weren’t the hackers supposed to have wiped everything clean? No one should have been able to trace it back to her.
