Cindy was fuming. “Ugh, I can’t believe it! How can she be so shameless? She’s pinning the blame on you… seriously, I just can’t.” She took a deep breath and tried to reassure Rebecca. “But hey, don’t worry. The Campbell family won’t be able to get any lawyers in Coralbridge.”
Rebecca raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Cindy grinned, clearly enjoying the moment. “Stephen already gave every law firm in town a heads-up. No one’s allowed to take the Campbell case. If they do, they’ll be going against Duncan Corporation. Nobody’s stupid enough to risk offending us just to help out the Campbells. We’re a pretty big deal compared to them.”
An unexpected warmth filled Rebecca’s chest. Stephen really was going above and beyond for her. Maybe even too much.
She sighed. “Tell Mr. Duncan thank you for me, will you?”
Cindy’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Why don’t you tell him yourself? He’s at home right now.”
Cindy glanced toward the study. Stephen sat there pretending to read a magazine, but it was so obvious he was eavesdropping. She had to bite back a smile. He wasn’t exactly subtle.
Yeah, after everything he’d done for her, it felt wrong not to thank him in person. So Rebecca opened her phone and typed out a message. [Mr. Duncan, thank you for your help.]
His reply came almost instantly. [No need to thank me. But is that all? Just words?]
Rebecca hesitated, then typed, [Well, I could treat you to”] She pressed send before she finished typing “dinner.”
Stephen didn’t miss a beat. [“Dinner?]
Rebecca’s face went hot. She started typing, deleted, typed again, then finally just sent, “It doesn’t have to be dinner. Whatever you’d like, Mr. Duncan.”
Stephen replied, “Alright. I’ll keep that in mind and let you know when I decide.”
