The Campbell and Lamont families pulled some strings to keep the drama under wraps, so the news barely made it past their inner circles. Somehow, though, Paul caught wind of it, even though he was still out of town on a business trip. He couldn’t get back right away, so all he could do was call and check in.
Of course, he trusted Rebecca more than Sonja. His voice was gentle, full of worry, as he tried to comfort her.
Rebecca had already gotten herself together. “I’m fine now. Thanks for checking on me,” she said, her voice cool and steady.
Paul felt a wave of bitterness in his chest. He could tell Rebecca was putting more and more distance between them.
“Rebecca,” he said, calling her by her full name for the first time. “No matter what happens, I believe you. I’m always on your side.” His voice was shaky, barely above a whisper. “Can you please not…”
Not push him away.
Rebecca went quiet for a moment. When she finally spoke, her tone was apologetic. “Sorry, I have to go.”
Paul felt like his heart was splitting in two. But he was stuck, out of town, and with his dad watching his every move, there was nothing he could do. Even if he wanted to drop everything and fly to her, it just wasn’t possible.
So, his only option was to ask Judy to look after Rebecca.
Judy didn’t waste any time. As soon as her workday ended, she called Rebecca. “Rebecca, we haven’t had a girls’ night in ages. Let’s try that new murder mystery game everyone’s obsessed with. What do you think?”
Rebecca actually smiled. “Sounds good to me.”
After work, Rebecca waited by Judy’s car. They planned to grab dinner first, then head to the game. Judy jogged over, all smiles, but when she opened the passenger door, her excitement fizzled out.
Cindy was already in the car.
