“The wrong crowd?” Judy thought. Was she talking about Paul’s old friends? For a second, Judy went quiet. It must have something to do with Rebecca’s ex-boyfriend. But Paul would never get mixed up with them.
Judy glanced at Rebecca, trying to explain. “Rebecca, please don’t get the wrong idea about Paul. He hardly ever spends time with those guys anymore. I was at his place recently and heard him arguing with his parents about it. He’s not the type to just go along with whatever they say.”
Cindy rolled her eyes. “Hardly ever? He followed them around like a puppy at the NovaStack Cloud team retreat just the other day.”
Judy rushed to explain. “That’s not why he was there. He only went because you were there, Rebecca. He wouldn’t have bothered otherwise.”
Cindy gave a little snort. “I knew it. He’s got an agenda with Rebecca.” She slapped her hand on the table for emphasis.
Judy turned back to Rebecca, her voice gentle and a little desperate. “Seriously, Rebecca, he is a good guy. I’ve never seen him care about anyone the way he cares about you.”
Cindy wasn’t impressed. “You make him sound like some innocent boy. Are you telling me he has never had a girlfriend?”
Come on. Even ordinary guys have some kind of experience when they reached this age. And Paul was rich and successful, which was bound to attract lots of girls.
But Judy just shook her head, completely serious. “He really hasn’t.”
Cindy stared at her in disbelief. No way. Absolutely not.
Rebecca looked shocked too. Paul has never dated anyone? That was almost impossible to imagine.
Cindy nudged closer to Rebecca, plopping herself down and slinging an arm around her shoulders. “Paul’s alright, I guess, but Stephen is the real catch!” She started listing Stephen’s qualities like she was reading off a résumé. “Look at my brother. He’s good-looking, fit, super polite, and you should see his education—undergrad at Larkhaven College, MBA from Wharton. Sure, he has a past, but it’s just one ex, and that ended ages ago.”
“And most importantly, if you marry him, I promise there won’t be any drama with sisters-in-law or mothers-in-law. Our family is actually chill. I swear.” Cindy grinned, practically bouncing with excitement like she was pitching her brother to a room full of investors.
